Hitless Hens Spoil Melville's Quality Start

Toledo Mud Hens News Release

In the final game before the All Star break, the Mud Hens went down in historic fashion. For the first time since June 1, 1977 in Richmond, Toledo was no-hit in a nine inning game. Unlike the last time when it only took one pitcher in Mickey Mahler, the Louisville Bats used three pitchers to combine to throw the no-hitter. The 5-0 loss was Toledo's second loss in a row.

Overlooked in Sunday's madness was Tim Melville's quality start for the Mud Hens. He went six innings and held the Bats' offense to three runs on six hits, and struck out two batters. He started off slow, allowing two runs in the first inning, but rebounded nicely for Toledo. Rafael Dolis and Angel Nesbitt also threw the ball well for the Hens, each throwing scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

On rehabilitation assignment from the Cincinnati Reds, Tony Cingrani started on the hill for the Bats. Due to being on a pitch count limit, he only lasted four innings, but still managed to strike out five batters while allowing no hits. David Holmberg came on in the fifth inning and lasted three innings of no hit baseball. In the eighth, Sam LeCure came on and closed it out for Louisville. With two outs in the ninth, Mike Hessman worked a 2-2 count on LeCure. Hessman, who is a prominent figure in the history of the International League, swung and missed at a curveball from LeCure, clinching the Louisville's first no hitter in their modern era.

The Mud Hens, along with the rest of the International League, are off until Thursday. Toledo returns to the Hen House on July 16 to take on the Indianapolis Indians at 7 p.m.
