The Syracuse Chiefs took the final game of the series against the Rochester Red Wings, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at NBT Bank Stadium. Taylor Jordan hurled six scoreless innings and four different Chiefs drove in a run to give Syracuse its seventh win in 10 games.
Syracuse (35-57) scored first in the bottom of the fourth inning against Rochester starter Greg Peavey. With two outs in the frame, Chris Nelson doubled into the left-field corner. The next batter, Ricky Hague, blooped a single to right-center to plate Nelson for the first run of the game.
The Chiefs added two more in the bottom of the fifth inning. Dan Butler and Josh Johnson each had a single to start the inning to put runners on the corners with no outs. With Johnson stealing second, Darin Mastroianni lined a single to center field to plate Butler and put runners on the corners again. Two batters later, Jason Martinson lined a double to the left-field corner to plate Johnson to give Syracuse a 3-0 lead.
Jordan put together a quality start on Sunday against Rochester. The Syracuse right-hander pitched six shutout innings against the Red Wings. He allowed only five hits and one walk while striking out four hitters. The six scoreless innings lowered Jordan's season ERA to 2.71 in 12 starts.
Rochester (49-42) got on the board in the top of the eighth inning against Rafael Martin. Jorge Polanco led off with a double to left field. James Beresford advanced Polanco to third on a ground ball to second base. Then, Chris Herrman drove in Polanco with a sacrifice fly to left field to cut the Red Wings deficit to two.
Syracuse added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning against Rochester reliever Aaron Thompson. With one out, Nelson singled to left field. With Hague at the plate, Nelson stole second as Hague struck out swinging to put a runner on second with two outs. The next batter, Mario Lisson, lined a single to center field to extend the lead to 4-1 after eight innings.
