Hens' Offense Goes Silent in Game Two Matinee
July 21, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Bacon and Eggs were up and at it early on Tuesday morning as the Hens and IronPigs went to battle in the second game of their four game set. The two teams came into the game with an identical record of 42-54, both sitting in fourth place in their repsective divisions. The Hens took the field looking to extend their winning streak to three after a walk off win over Indy on Sunday and a series opening win against Lehigh Valley on Monday night.
On the mound for Toledo was right hander Thad Weber, entering the game with six wins and searching for a seventh. Weber was coming off a start in which he went 7.0 IP against Indy, but was tagged with the loss. On Tuesday, Weber battled through six frames without his best stuff, as he struck out five and walked none. Anthony Vasquez earned the win (6) for the IronPigs, going six strong and surrendering just one run.
The IronPigs' bats came out hot off Weber as shortstop Chase d'Arnaud put his team on the board in the third with a two run home run (3) to left, scoring Eric Kratz. The two were at it once again in the 5th as d'Arnaud and Kratz brought around two more Lehigh runners with RBI doubles off Weber. The lead was extended in the fifth to 5-1 after Aaron Altherr reached on a fielding error from Mike Hessman at third, scoring d'Arnaud.
The Hens only run of the game came across in the top of the third as Josh Wilson hit a sac fly to left field, scoring Trayvon Robinson. Two of the Hens most promising prospects remain hot in the heart of the Toledo order, as Dixon Machado and Steven Moya each finished 2-4 at the plate. The duo combined for four of the five Toledo hits on the day.
Alberto Cabrera and Tom Gorzelanny proceeded Weber on the mound, each throwing a scorless inning of relief against the Lehigh offense. Gorzelanny looked to be more comfortable with his new sidearm delivery Tuesday afternoon, as he struck out two in his inning of relief. The inning was Gorzelanny's first since recently being removed from the temporary inactive list due to an injury to RHP Jeff Ferrell.
The two teams are back at it on Wednesday in the third game of the series, first pitch is set for 7:05pm.
