Rochester Red Wings News Release

The Gwinnett Braves broke up a perfect game by Tyler Duffey with two runs in the sixth, on the way to a 5-3 win over the Rochester Red Wings Tuesday night at Frontier Field. Second place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre also lost, so the Wings hang onto their half-game lead over the RailRiders.

Rookie right-hander Tyler Duffey matched up Tuesday with Atlanta Braves righty Williams Perez, who was making his second rehab start for Gwinnett. Duffey's first inning was efficient, with two strikeouts wrapped around a ground out.

The Red Wings got a lead-off double from Jorge Polanco in the bottom of the first, and James Beresford moved Polanco to third base with a grounder to the right side of the infield. Reynaldo Rodriguez brought Polanco home with an RBI single, for a 1-0 Rochester lead.

Duffey and Perez matched each other out for out, retiring the sides in order in both the second and third innings. Perez notched five strikeouts in the two innings, while Duffey remained perfect for the first three innings.

Perez was finished in the fourth inning after reaching his pitch limit, as right-hander Jake Brigham (3-0) replaced him. Perez went 3 2/3 plus innings, allowed one run on two hits, one walk, and struck out seven. He threw 62 total pitches, 39 of them were strikes. The Wings failed to capitalize on the Brigham, as Chris Herrmann grounded out with runners on first and third to end the fourth inning.

The Wings increased their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Jose Martinez began the inning by reaching first base on a throwing error. After back-to-back fly outs by the Wings, Martinez advanced himself and stole second base, his third stolen base on the season. With Martinez on second, Polanco delivered a single up the middle and Martinez scored to give the Wings a 2-0 lead.

Duffey's perfect game bid ended in the top of the sixth, as Castro led off with a single to center. Todd Cunningham followed with a bloop single to put runners on first and second with no one out. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners over to second and third, Mallex Smith delivered the first run for the Braves with a slow ground out to Beresford to make the score 2-1 Wings. Jose Peraza launched a triple into deep right-center field that scored the second run of the inning against Duffey, tying the game 2-2.

The Wings responded in the bottom of the sixth. Oswaldo Arcia lined a double into the right field corner to lead off the inning. After a ground out by Rodriguez and a long fly out by Danny Ortiz, Herrmann hit a single into left field, and Arcia scored to give the lead back to Rochester 3-2. Herrmann snapped an 0-for-18 skid with the RBI base hit.

Duffey's night ended on a rough note, as he exited the game with runners on second and third in the top of the seventh. Wings righty Alex Meyer replaced him. Meyer got the first batter he faced to ground out, however a run scored to tie the game 3-3. Meyer then gave up a two-run home run to Cunningham and the Braves took the lead 5-3. Two of the runs in the inning were charged to Duffey, both unearned. Duffey (4-5) threw 6 1/3 innings, allowed four runs (two earned), on four hits, and no walks. He struck out five and threw 106 pitches total, 76 of them for strikes.

Aaron Thompson pitched the eighth inning, picking up a strikeout. A.J. Achter worked a scoreless ninth inning. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Polanco doubled off Peter Moylan - Polanco's third hit of the night. The Braves brought in Matt Marksberry, who got Beresford to ground out to end the game. Marksberry recorded his first save of the season.

The Wings out-hit the Braves 9-7.
