Rochester Red Wings News Release
Heading to Cooperstown for this weekend's Hall of Fame ceremonies and activities? Planning an upcoming trip to explore and enjoy your love of baseball?
A new mobile app from the Cooperstown shrine - "BHOF Beacon" - is now available for free in iOS through iTunes. The app provides baseball fans with an exclusive location-based mobile tool that opens users' eyes to baseball history all around them, ultimately inspiring a pilgrimage to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.
The app also incorporates artifacts, historic imagery and video from the Museum, spotlighting destinations throughout New York State that a Cooperstown-bound visitor might encounter along the way, such as the location of the now-shuttered Ebbets Field where Jackie Robinson made his major league debut on April 15, 1947.
The destinations include Silver Stadium, the former Norton Street home of the Red Wings; Frontier Field, our current home; and Dwyer Stadium in Batavia, home of the New York-Penn League Batavia Muckdogs.
"The Beacon puts Cooperstown on the App Map, by connecting visitors planning road trips with the engaging collections of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, to create an entertaining journey through baseball history while making the ultimate voyage to baseball's home," said Jeff Idelson, President of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. "Beacon users will be enlightened by stories, artifacts and images from historic moments in baseball that took place all around them, as they journey to Cooperstown."
Built by Sullivan, a top brand engagement firm, The Beacon brings to fans a living exhibit of baseball moments and places throughout the country, starting with New York State. The Beacon provides users with indicators when near an historical baseball site, showcasing pictures, video and audio to deepen the user experience.
"Sullivan is thrilled to have played a part in helping The National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum to create a mobile platform that brings the game's rich national history to life for fans locally," said Alison Grippo, principal of digital strategy, Sullivan. "Through our collaboration, we've built a mobile experience that curates the institution's vast reservoir of content in way that keeps fans constantly engaged and inspired to discover what makes one of America's favorite pastimes truly special."
Thanks to support from Empire State Development and the I Love NY Division of Tourism, The Beacon app is the first to be released by the Baseball Hall of Fame. The self-discovery experience of The Beacon app will be complemented with additional features and content as new places and moments from across the country are continually being added.
