Syracuse Mets News Release
Buffalo, NY (July 21, 2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs took the second game of a four-game series with the Buffalo Bisons, 7-5, Tuesday night at Coca-Cola Field. Chris Nelson hit his third home run as a Chief for Syracuse's 11th win in its last 16 games. Trea Turner went 3 for 3 with two doubles, a walk, a sacrifice fly and two steals, while Major-League rehabber Jayson Werth was 2 for 4 with a walk in the win.
Syracuse (39-59) grabbed the lead in the first inning. Turner doubled with one out off Bisons starter Joel Piniero. After a Werth single, Kevin Keyes hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Turner to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.
Buffalo (48-49) immediately answered in the bottom of the frame. Dalton Pompey and Jon Berti each singled off Bruce Billings. Three batters later, Melky Mesa brought home Pompey on a sacrifice fly to tie the score at one. After a walk, Caleb Gindl singled home Berti to give the Bisons the lead at 2-1, though Hassan was thrown out at the plate on the play to end the inning.
The Chiefs added three more runs between the second and third innings. Mario Lisson walked in the second, advanced to second on a Josh Johnson walk, moved to third on a Darin Mastroianni single and scored on Turner's sacrifice fly to tie the game.
In the third, Nelson stroked a two-run home run with Keyes on first to give the Chiefs the lead back at 4-2. Nelson's now smashed 12 extra-base hits out of 25 hits total in his 26 Syracuse games.
Buffalo cut the lead in half in the fourth. Gindl singled, followed by a Sean Ochinko double to put runners on second and third. Two batters later, Pompey grounded out to first base, scoring Gindl to cut the deficit to one.
The game held at 4-3 until the seventh. Aaron Sanchez came in on Major-League rehab and walked Turner and Werth with one out. With Keyes batting, both runners moved up on a double steal. Turner would score on a passed ball by Ochinko with Keyes still batting to extend the lead to 5-3. After a Keyes infield single, Chris Nelson struck out. On the third-strike pitch, the ball got away from Ochinko on a second passed ball of the inning, allowing Werth to score to push the lead to 6-3.
The Bisons got two runs back in the eighth. Mesa singled off Scott McGregor and scored two batters later on a double by Gindl to get the Bisons within two. Ochinko then singled home Gindl, cutting the score to one. McGregor recovered, inducing a double-play ground ball to shortstop from Pompey to curb the rally.
The Chiefs added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Again, Turner started the rally with a leadoff single before stealing second. Werth then singled him in to stretch the lead to 7-5.
Buffalo rallied in the ninth with singles from Berti and Hassan against Matt Grace. The left-hander recovered, however, inducing a fielder's choice from Mesa and game-ending fly out from Andy Burns.
Syracuse and Buffalo return for game three of the four-game set Wednesday at Coca-Cola Field. Taylor Hill is scheduled to start for the Chiefs opposite Daniel Norris for the Bisons. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
