Heat Burns Wild in the First, Posts 5-1 Win

STOCKTON, CA - The Iowa Wild (21-36-3-4, 49 points) were defeated by the Stockton Heat (26-24-2-2, 56 points) 5-1 in front of 4,476 fans at the Stockton Arena on Friday evening. Stockton's Kenny Agostino, Hunter Smith and Drew Shore each scored in the first seven minutes of play and Heat goalie Kevin Poulin (12-8-3) made 20 saves for the victory. Captain Derek Grant scored twice as Stockton connected for three power-play strikes, sweeping the season series. Iowa goalie Leland Irving (10-19-4) made 31 saves in defeat. Center Grayson Downing scored the Wild's lone goal. The Wild travels to San Jose on Saturday, Mar. 19 for an 8 p.m. CT game against the Barracuda.

The Heat jumped out to a quick lead with three goals in the game's first 7:08 of play. Stockton forward Kenny Agostino scored off the rush, snapping a wrist shot from the left-wing circle in the Iowa zone. Agostino beat Leland Irving just inside the far post, scoring his 18th goal of the season for a 1-0 Heat lead. Stockton made it 2-0 after Hunter Smith snuck a wrist shot past Irving at 5:07. His second goal of the season set up by Tyler Wotherspoon. The Heat made it a three-goal lead at 7:08 when Drew Shore tallied his seventh goal of the season. Emile Poirier slipped a pass to Shore off the rush and the Heat forward beat Irving with a backhander. Mason Raymond added an assist for the 3-0 lead.

The Heat expanded its lead to 4-0 at 2:45 of the second period. Captain Derek Grant potted a loose puck to the right of Irving, scoring his 24th goal of the year. Forwards Hunter Shinkaruk and Agostino each picked up an assist on Grant's goal. Iowa got on the scoreboard at 15:52 of the middle frame. Center Grayson Downing took a feed from defenseman Christian Folin. Downing turned and beat goalie Kevin Poulin for his 17th goal of the season, a power-play score. Right wing Marc Hagel added an assist as Iowa trimmed the deficit to 4-1.

Stockton connected for its third power-play goal at 2:01 of the third period, increasing the lead to 5-1. Agostino and Kenny Morrison helped work the puck down low to Grant. The Heat center pocketed his second goal of the night, 25th goal of the season, with a quick shot in the slot.
