Crunch Downed by Senators, 4-3, in Overtime

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - After trailing by two in the second period, the Syracuse Crunch netted three consecutive goals to climb back and take over the lead. However, the Binghamton Senators were able to knot the score and eventually downed the Crunch, 4-3, in overtime tonight at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.

Tonight's contest completes a 10-game season series between the teams. The Crunch finished at 7-1-2-0 and currently sit at 25-25-10-3 on the season. Despite the loss, the Crunch earned one point for the first time in three games. The Senators are now 25-32-4-1.

Crunch goaltender Adam Wilcox made 20 saves in defeat, while his counterpart, Matt O'Connor, stopped 34-of-37. Syracuse converted on 1-of-7 power play opportunities and shut down all three Binghamton man-advantages.

After a scoreless first period, the Senators scored two in a row in the second. Chris Carlisle backhanded a feed from the end boards for Casey Bailey to one-time from the right circle at 1:47. Jason Akeson earned the secondary assist on the opening tally. At the 13:01 mark, Binghamton capitalized on a turnover in the neutral zone. Max McCormick passed ahead for Ryan Rupert to beat Wilcox five-hole on the breakaway. Fredrik Claesson grabbed a point on the play.

With 1:11 remaining in the second, the Crunch cut the lead in half. During 4-on-4 play, a battle behind the cage caused the puck to kick out for Jeff Tambellini to chip in for his 22nd of the season.

The Crunch evened the score 4:36 into the final frame. Matt Taormina received a pass from Dylan Blujus and powered home a slap shot from the right point.

Syracuse finally took over the lead halfway through the period. Jonathan Drouin ripped a shot crossbar and down from the left circle off assists from Taormina and Matthew Peca.

The lead didn't last long and the Senators knotted the game for a second time two minutes later to eventually force overtime. Kyle Flanagan let one go from the blue line that was redirected by Daultan Leveille in front of the net for his first of the season. Michael Keranen picked up a point for the secondary helper.

Just 36 seconds into the overtime period, McCormick passed all the way down the ice for Flanagan to end the game on a breakaway.

The Crunch return to the War Memorial Arena to host the St. John's IceCaps tomorrow at 7 p.m.
