Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - Behind a strong starting performance from left-hander Shaeffer Hall, the Trenton Thunder (8-10) downed the Richmond Flying Squirrels (8-10), 3-2, in front of 7,719 at The Diamond on Tuesday night. The Thunder evened the series at a game apiece and improved their record against the Squirrels to 4-1 on the season.

Squirrels' starter Daryl Maday had faced just one over the minimum through four scoreless innings, but he found trouble in the top of the fifth. A one-out walk issued to Corban Joseph opened the door for the Thunder and Jose Pirela followed with a single to put two runners aboard. Ray Kruml followed with an RBI single, his fourth of the series, to put Trenton on the board, 1-0. Addison Maruszak followed with a single to score Pirela and stretch the lead to 2-0. Maday walked Austin Krum at the top of the order to load the bases, and Dan Brewer contributed a sacrifice-fly to left field to cap a three-run rally.

Maday (0-2) retired after five innings, tagged with his second loss of the season. He was charged with three runs - all earned - on four hits and two walks. He struck out three.

Meanwhile, Hall (2-1) was in control, needing just 68 pitches to roll through seven scoreless innings while allowing just four hits. The Squirrels mounted their only attack on the left-hander in the eighth when Roger Kieschnick started the inning with a single. A batter later, Johnny Monell bent a two-run home run down the left-field line to tighten the ballgame at 3-2. It was the second home run in as many days for Monell, who has driven in five runs over the first two games of the series. Hall departed to the win on the home run, ultimately working 7 1/3 innings and conceding the two runs on six hits. He walked none and struck out three.

Right-hander Tim Norton came on in relief and closed out the win for Trenton with little further incident. He earned his first save of the season, while retiring the side in order in the ninth. Overshadowed in the loss for Richmond was another strong effort from their bullpen, which turned in a combined four scoreless innings. Osiris Matos turned in two innings and Edwin Quirarte and Jason Stoffel each tossed one.

Game three of the four-game series is scheduled for 6:35 PM on Wednesday night at The Diamond. LHP Eric Surkamp (0-2, 3.38) will make the start for the Squirrels against RHP Craig Heyer (1-2, 2.70) for the Thunder. For tickets or more information, visit www.squirrelsbaseball.com.
