Chesapeake Baysox News Release
AKRON, Ohio - Robbie Widlansky continued to terrorize opposing teams Tuesday night, going 2-4 and hitting his second home run of the series and also driving in three RBIs as the Baysox beat the Akron Aeros 6-4 in the first leg of a double header. Bowie's offense sputtered in the second game as they fell 1-0 to split the doubleheader and moved to 9-9 on the season.
Designated hitter Joe Mahoney appeared in his first game since April 9 after being removed from the Disabled List on Monday. In the first game, Mahoney went 1-3 with a walk and two strikeouts.
The Baysox got off to a fast start when leadoff batter and center fielder Xavier Avery doubled to center field. After right-fielder Jeff Fiorentino flied out, third baseman Brandon Waring drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Mahoney struck out for the second out of inning, but then after a wild pitch by SeaWolves pitcher Austin Adams moved the runners to second and third, Widlansky hit a three-run blast to center field.
Shortstop Pedro Florimon kept up the pressure with a single to left field and Adams' short night on the mound ended after he walked first baseman Billy Rowell and second baseman Carlos Rojas to load the bases. Paolo Espino entered to replace Adams and retired catcher Steve Lerud to end the inning with the Baysox up 3-0.
Right-handed starting pitcher Zach Clark got all three Aeros to ground out in the first inning, but ran into some trouble in the second. With two outs, Matt McBride hit a single to center field and Tim Fedroff followed that with a triple to right field that would push McBride across to cut the Baysox lead to two before Clark got out of the inning.
The Baysox extended the lead back to three runs with the help of a solo home run by right fielder Ronnie Welty in the top of the fourth inning. Welty entered the game in the top of the second inning as a pinch hitter for Fiorentino. After the lead off home run by Welty, Espino retired the next two batters, but surrendered a double to Widlansky before being replaced by Bryan Price, who retired Florimon to end the inning.
Bowie extended its lead in the top of the sixth after Chen Lee entered the game for Akron. Avery hit a lead off single to right field and after Welty flied out, Waring hit an infield single to the pitcher that moved Avery to second. Mahoney walked to load the bases and Greg Miclat entered as a pinch runner for Waring. After Widlansky struck out, Florimon hit a two-RBI single to left field that extended the Baysox lead to 6-1.
With right-handed reliever Raul Rivero pitching in the top of the ninth inning, the Aeros attempted a comeback. McBride hit a lead off single to left field and Fedroff followed that with a single to left field that moved McBride to second. Matt Lawson hit a double to left field that plated McBride and moved Fedroff to third with no outs. Donnie Webb then hit a triple that cleared the bases and brought the Aeros to within two runs at 6-4. Right-handed closer Jose Diaz entered the game for the Baysox and retired three consecutive batters to end the game and keep Akron from inflicting any more damage.
Clark earned the win, his second of the season, after pitching five innings and allowing one earned run on five hits. Rivero threw one inning and allowed three earned runs on four hits before Diaz recorded his seventh save of the season to end the game.
In nine appearances, Diaz has recorded an Eastern League leading seven saves. Diaz has thrown eight and two-thirds innings and struck out 10 while not walking a single batter.
The second leg of the doubleheader was a pitching duel as right-handed starting pitcher Wynn Pelzer and Eric Berger both had strong outings. After pitching four scoreless innings, Pelzer got into trouble in the fifth inning. He surrendered a lead off walk to Juan Apodaca and a sacrifice bunt by Karexon Sanchez moved Apodaca to second. An infield single by Fedroff moved Apodaca to third and after Webb lined out to third base, Juan Diaz hit an RBI single to right field that put the Aeros up 1-0.
The 1-0 lead would be enough for the Aeros to win the game as the Baysox were never able to get a run across despite five hits. The shutout loss marks the third time the Baysox have been unable to score a run in a game this season.
After walking five batters in his previous start, Pelzer walked only one batter through five innings and allowed just one earned run, but was still tagged with the loss. Pelzer's ERA remains below 1.00 after pitching 14.0 innings this season. Right-handed reliever Cole McCurry threw one inning in relief of Pelzer and did not allow any hits while striking out two batters.
Over the two games, Avery managed four hits in eight at bats and stole another base to increase his Eastern League leading total to 13. Avery was also caught stealing once in each game. They were the second and third times he had been caught between bases.
The team returns home for a seven game home stand Thursday, April 29. The home stand features Date Night at the Diamond Friday, April 30, NASCAR Night with a Nationwide stock car and racecar simulator postgame fireworks Saturday, April 31, and Mustache Mania Wednesday, April 4.
