Senators Halt Curve With 4-1 Win

Altoona Curve News Release
HARRISBURG, Pa. - Altoona's bid to creep above the .500 mark was once again thwarted on Tuesday night as the Senators defeated the Curve, 4-1, at Metro Bank Park. Jordy Mercer went 2-for-4 in the loss and provided the Curve's only offense in the game with his home run in the eighth inning. Starling Marte's 13-game hitting streak and 15-game on-base streak also ended on Tuesday night as the centerfielder went 0-for-4.
Starter Aaron Thompson (2-2) once again started out well for the Curve but ran into some trouble as the game wore on. His former team scored their first run in the fourth when Chris Rahl singled in Josh Johnson for the game's first run.
The Senators added on three more runs in the fifth off Thompson with two away on run-scoring hits by Johnson and Jesus Valdez. The southpaw finished 5.0 innings and allowed four runs on six hits with two walks and one strikeout.
Harrisburg's starter Erik Davis (1-0) kept Altoona off the scoreboard in his six innings of work. The Curve threatened from the get-go, with Brock Holt singling and stealing second with no one down in the first, but couldn't get anything going against Davis.
Mercer's home run in the eighth came off Senators reliever and former Pirates farmhand Jimmy Barthmaier and pulled Altoona within three. Barthmaier then retired the next three men he faced and Ryan Mattheus retired the side in order in the ninth for his first save of the 2011 season.
Holt went 2-for-4 in the loss for the Curve and extended his hitting streak to nine games while Tony Sanchez also had a pair of hits in the loss.
Altoona (8-9) and Harrisburg (9-8) will match up in the third game of the four-game duel beginning at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Metro Bank Park. The Curve send RHP Jared Hughes (0-1, 5.40) to the hill to try and get the club back to .500 while the âSens counter with RHP Ryan Tatusko (0-2, 8.31).
Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
