Gulls Roll into All-Star Break

January 19, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO –– The all-star break is probably the only thing that can slow down the San Diego Gulls at this point. They just keep on winning and have now crept to third place in the Pacific Division standings, with plenty of games still in hand.

WEEK IN REVIEW:

The only mistake the Gulls made last week – which have been few and far between lately – was losing to a struggling Fresno Falcons team on Friday. San Diego regrouped however and beat the Alaska Aces Saturday and Sunday nights. So now the Gulls are in third place, five points behind the division-leading Idaho Steelheads. They're two points back of the Las Vegas Wranglers. San Diego has played four fewer games than Idaho and still has three games in hand on Las Vegas

Jan. 16 @ Fresno

Mark Pederson put his name in the Gulls record books by scoring in his ninth straight game, but it wasn't enough as Fresno doubled-up San Diego, 4-2. Pederson gave the Gulls a 1-0 and 2-1 lead, but the Falcons came roaring back each time. The game was tied until Kevin Truelson netted the game-winner 5:58 into the third. Mike Mathers added an empty-netter and that was all she wrote.

Jan. 17 vs. Alaska

Dean Tiltgen scored with 2:31 left in the third period and Sylvain Deschatelets added an insurance marker moments later, lifting the Gulls to a 4-2 victory over the Aces. Alaska jumped out to a 2-0 lead on first-period goals by Wes Dorey and Ryan Moren. Chris Gobert cut the lead in half later in the opening frame. Alaska maintained its one-goal lead until the Gulls erupted for three goals in the third period. Greg Barber knotted the game midway through the third before Tiltgen and Deschatelets tallied. Pederson got an assist to extend his point streak, but his goal streak came to an end.

Jan. 18 vs. Alaska

Pederson scored two more goals while his linemates Barber and Deschatelets pitched in with two assists, leading the Gulls to a tight 2-1 win. It was 1-0 Gulls all the way into the third period before Pederson netted the game-winner midway through the third. Alaska finally solved Trevor Koenig with 19.1 seconds left in the game, but it was too little to late.
