Gulls Finish Road Trip 1-2-1
November 17, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO ââ The San Diego Gulls are finally starting to catch up in games played. But there's one problem... they're not gaining any ground. San Diego just finished a four-game road trip with three points. Now the Blue and Orange look to get healthy with nine of its next 11 games at home.
With their recent slide, the Gulls have fallen into last place in the Pacific Division, 11 points out of first place but just six points out of second. Even after the four-game week, San Diego has still played the fewest games in the Western Conference.
WEEK IN REVIEW:
The Gulls started the road trip in Anchorage, Alaska â a place where they've dominated the last eight years... Well... where haven't they dominated? The Aces however turned the tables sweeping the two-game set with a combined score of 11-1. San Diego then picked up a win in Bakersfield before losing in a shootout in Long Beach.
Nov. 11 @ Alaska:
The Aces scored four times on the power play, including twice with a two-man advantage, en route to embarrassing the Gulls 8-1. The seven-goal loss tied a franchise record. Wes Dorey had a goal and two assists while Joe Talbot pitched in with two tallies. Dorey recorded back-to-back goals between the second and third periods to put the game out of reach. Valdemar Pelikovsky and Kimbi Daniels each notched a goal and an assist while Lance Mayes turned away 29 shots. Mark Pederson scored the lone goal for San Diego.
Nov. 12 @ Alaska:
Dan Murphy stooped all 30 shots and Talbot had a goal and an assist as the Aces blanked the Gulls 3-0, sweeping the two-game set. Murphy turned away all 17 shots he faced over the final two periods to preserve the win and record his first shutout of the season. David Burleigh made 18 saves in a losing effort.
Nov. 14 vs. Bakersfield:
Dennis Purdie scored twice to help San Diego defeat Bakersfield, 3-2. Purdie netted his second goal of the year shorthanded midway through the first period and scored on the power play with 8:17 left in the second for a 3-0 advantage. Trevor Koenig turned aside 17 of the 19 shots he faced for his fourth win of the season.
Nov. 15 vs. Long Beach:
Mike Ouellet scored the decisive shootout goal to lift the Long Beach Ice Dogs over the Gulls, 1-0. Colin Zulianello finished with 29 saves and stopped all six attempts in the shootout to record his first shutout for Long Beach. Koenig made 27 saves and stopped the first five shootout attempts before surrendering a goal to take the loss for San Diego, its fourth in five games.
THIS WEEK:
San Diego returns home Wednesday to face the Fresno Falcons in a rematch of last season's Taylor Cup Finals. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be the first "College Night." Students who present a valid college ID will receive $7 terrace tickets, $2 drink specials and $2 hot dogs. The Gulls then go back to Bakersfield Friday for a 7 p.m. affair with the Condors.
TEAM NOTES:
The Gulls were outscored 14-4 on their four-game road trip... San Diego has not scored an even strength goal since its win over Florida on Nov. 7 (335:08)... Steve Martinson needs 11 more wins for 400 all-time in his coaching career. He's been the only coach in Gulls franchise history...
PLAYER NOTES:
Dennis Purdie needs three more points for 500 in his pro career... Leading scorer Billy Tibbetts was placed on the 7-day injured list with a fractured wrist. He's expected to be out for at least another two weeks... Sandro Sbrocca was placed on IR with a sore groin...
All games can be heard on KPOP 1360AM with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. The Gulls' Internet radio show, hosted by Tera Black and Jeremy Zager on wsradio.com, will begin airing biweekly soon. Stay tuned for more details.
