San Diego Gulls News Release

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah - It may have taken a little extra time Monday night, but the San Diego Gulls still found a way to win, thanks again to Alex Kim. The red-hot San Diego centerman scored 1:27 into overtime, leading the Gulls to a 2-1 victory, completing a two-game sweep of the Utah Grizzlies.

Kim also notched the game-wining goal Saturday night and tacked on two assists, helping the Blue and Orange to a 4-3 win. Along with his second straight game-winner Monday, Kim notched another helper and now has 13 points since joining the Gulls nine games ago.

Meanwhile, Tyler Weiman picked up his second straight win after stopping 26 of 27 shots. The San Diego netminder is now 4-7-2 on the year, as his Gulls move two games above .500 for the first time this season.

More importantly, San Diego (10-8-4) moves back into a second place tie in the Pacific Division with the idle Long Beach Ice Dogs. The Gulls also move within three points of the division-leading Fresno Falcons. Utah (13-8-2) remains fourth in the West Division, one point behind the third place Idaho Steelheads.

It was a scoreless game until teams traded power-play goals in the second period. Matt Craig gave the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead with his league-leading 16th goal 5:13 into the middle frame. Garett Cameron, standing behind the net, found an open Craig at the right post and the Utah centerman banged it past an out-stretched Weiman.

Newcomer Patrick Levesque tied it at the 14:01 mark of the second, redirecting Kim's point shot past goaltender Justin Eddy, who finished the game with 36 saves. It was Levesque's second goal in as many games with San Diego.

It stayed 1-1 until Kim ended it 1:27 into the extra frame. He and linemate Jesse Bennefield muscled their way into the Utah zone before Kim eventually beat Eddy for his seventh goal of the season.

Notes: Kim has six points in his last three games (3g, 3a) and has 13 points total in a Gulls uniform (7g, 6a)... Bennefield has points in four straight games... Defenseman Evan Shaw is expected to join the Gulls this week... Guillaume Fournier was placed on the seven-day injured reserve after suffering a concussion Saturday in Utah... Darren Clark (elbow), Doug MacIver (knee) and Andy Thompson (wrist) also remain on the injured list...

The Gulls return home for a brief two-game homestand Friday against Long Beach and Saturday vs. Bakersfield. Friday's contest begins at 7:35 p.m. and will be another "Free Food Friday," with the first 3,500 fans receiving a voucher for a free hot dog. Saturday's game is a 7:05 p.m. start and is "Stuff Your Stocking Night," which means the first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a special Gulls Christmas stocking filled with special goodies.
