Checkers Survive First 14-Of-20 On the Road

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Checkers finished their first 20 games of the season, 14 of which were on the road, with a record of 10-9-1 and 21 points. This past week the Checkers recovered from two home losses on Tuesday and Thursday to Columbia and Gwinnett, respectively, to pick up a 5-4 overtime win against South Carolina on Friday. The Checkers made the overnight trip to Pensacola and suffered a 3-4 loss to the Ice Pilots on Saturday.

Tuesday, December 6, 2005 vs. Columbia, L, 0-1 The Columbia Inferno defeated the Charlotte Checkers 1-0 Tuesday night at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena in front of 3,694 fans. Brandon Nolan scored the game winner on a short-handed goal at the 16:58 mark in the second period (from Travis Lisabeth).

The Checkers fired 33 shots at Chris Houle who picked up the shutout win for the Inferno along with the first star of the game. Nolan was awarded the second star of the game.

Thursday, December 8, 2005 vs. Gwinnett, L, 3-4 The Gwinnett Gladiators scored the final three goals of the game after trailing 3-1 to defeat the Charlotte Checkers 4-3 Thursday night in front of 4,591 fans at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena.

Gwinnett chipped away at the Checkers lead getting a goal from Guiallaume Desbiens in the second period and then tied the game on a power play goal by Derek Nesbitt early in the third period. With the score tied 3-3 and the Checkers on the power play, Gwinnett stole the puck in the neutral zone during a Checkers line change and the number one star of the game, Pascal Pelletier, scored the game winner at the 16:05 mark.

Friday, December 9, 2005 vs. South Carolina, W-OT, 5-4

Blake Bellefeuille turned in a hat trick, scoring the game-winner in overtime to lead the Charlotte Checkers to a 5-4 overtime win against the South Carolina Stingrays Friday night in front of 6,977 fans at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena.

Bellefeuille's three goals came on a short-handed breakaway at the 00:22 mark of the second period, a power play goal at the 8:41 mark of the second period and the game winner came with the teams at even strength at the 3:23 mark of overtime.

Saturday, December 10, 2005 @ Pensacola, L, 3-4

Charlotte's woes in Pensacola continued Saturday night as the Ice Pilots edged the Checkers 4-3 in Florida. It was Charlotte's fourth straight loss to the Ice Pilots at the Pensacola Civic Center dating back to last season, and the fifth straight loss to the Ice Pilots overall.

- Defenseman Rory Rawlyk continues to lead the Checkers in points with 18 (8g, 10a) and is tied for second place amongst defenseman in the league with his six goals.

- The Checkers continue to lead the league in overall penalty killing record (86.4%).

- Blake Bellefeuille recorded his first hat trick of the season Friday night against South Carolina.

- The Checkers currently have two first-round draft picks on their roster. Winger Hugh Jessiman (selected by New York Rangers round 1 #12 overall in 2003 NHL Entry Draft) and goalie Al Montoya (selected by New York Rangers round 1 #6 overall in 2004 NHL Entry Draft).
