San Diego Gulls News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Rookie winger Trent Clark was out of a job early this week. By Friday night however, he was proving to Gulls coach Steve Martinson why he is thankful to be re-signed, scoring his first professional goal and helping the Gulls win 4-1 in their first game of three this weekend in Anchorage. The win puts the Gulls in third place in West Coast Hockey League standings and back at 500.
The Gulls (6-6-1) jumped to a quick lead only 24 seconds into the contest when former Anchorage player Clayton Read tucked in a backhand rebound that slipped past Ace's goaltender Christian Soucy near the left post. Dean Tiltgen earned the assist.
The Aces tied the game at one when the puck trickled past Gulls goaltender Trevor Koenig by a bad, but lucky bounce off the leg of Eric Landry. The goal came at 9:38 of the first period and was on the Aces' second shot of the game. The assists went to Jirj Jakes and J.J. Wrobel.
With Anchorage player Don Martin in the penalty box, San Diego winger Tiltgen took advantage of the power play. He put the Gulls back on top while earning his ninth goal of the season deflecting a shot by defenseman Trevor Sherban from the blue line, beating Soucy glove side. Read earned the assist on the game-winning goal.
The Gulls broke out of the hockey doldrums by launching an offensive flurry in the second period with two goals in 1:04. The first was by Clark at 7:58 with an assist from rookie Sandro Sbrocca. Sbrocca set up the play and Clark fired a shot from the top of the right circle that sailed just inside the right post, beating Soucy.
Then, the Gulls took advantage of a five-on-three opportunity and scored with a one-timer from Mike Garrow. Soucy had little chance to block the shot taken from the top of the right circle. The goal was Garrow's sixth of the season, all on the power play. The goal came at 15:41 of the second period. Read and Tiltgen earned points for the assists. With the win, the Gulls break a two game losing streak and look to continue their strong play at Sullivan Arena with two more games this weekend.
