West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Just two days after Brandon Inge put on a Whitecaps uniform for a rehab appearance in West Michigan, the Detroit Tigers have announced that Carlos Guillen will also be appearing at Fifth Third Ballpark for a rehabilitation assignment.

Guillen will join the West Michigan Whitecaps for Friday's game against the Great Lakes Loons, which will also feature an appearance by former Tiger great Mike Henneman as part of the Tigers Friday series. After the game, fans will be treated to a post-game fireworks show presented by Farm Bureau Insurance.

Gates will open early at 4:00 p.m. for the 7:00 p.m. game and the box office will open at 9:00 a.m., though tickets are available 24 hours a day online. Seats can be reserved by visiting whitecapsbaseball.com, calling 616-784-4131, or stopping by the box office at Fifth Third Ballpark.

The versatile Guillen, a 34-year-old native of Venezuela, was placed on the Disabled List on July 25 with a strained right calf. He was hitting .280 with five home runs, 30 RBI, and 16 doubles through 61 games while seeing time at second base, in the outfield, and as the designated hitter. Guillen also spent time on the Disabled List earlier in the season due to a strained left hamstring, and went 6-for-18 during a five-game rehab stint with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens in late May before returning to Detroit. With the return of Brandon Inge and the trading deadline acquisition of Jhonny Peralta, Guillen is expected to take over as the starting second baseman upon his return to the Tigers.

A 13-year major league veteran, Guillen was initially signed by the Houston Astros in 1992 before being traded to the Seattle Mariners as part of the 1998 deal that sent Randy Johnson to Houston. He made his Major League debut later that season and spent his first six seasons in the big leagues with the Mariners. Prior to the 2006 campaign, the Tigers acquired the powerful Guillen in an off-season trade that shipped Ramon Santiago and a minor leaguer to Seattle. A three-time All-Star, Guillen has a career .286 batting average with 120 home runs and 643 RBI in 1,270 major league games.

The Whitecaps wind down a seven-game homestand at Fifth Third Ballpark with the third game of a four-game series against the Great Lakes Loons at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 5. LHP Jared Wesson (3-1, 2.72) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against RHP Josh Wall (7-4, 3.40) of the Loons. In addition to an Altogas Thrifty Thursday, it will be '70's Night with a Youth Jerseys for the first 500 kids under 12 and a post-game concert from Pretzel Logic. Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.
