Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - With a 10-hit attack on offense and six shutout innings from Murphy Smith, the Kane County Cougars cruised past the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 6-2, on Thursday night in front of 9,455 at Elfstrom Stadium. The Cougars never trailed and now can take three of four from the Kernels with a win Friday and go 5-2 on their seven-game homestand.
Conner Crumbliss hit a two-out solo homer in the third off Ariel Pena (5-4) to make it 1-0, and the Cougars scored three times in the fourth with two-out hitting. Max Stassi drove in Anthony Aliotti, and Mitch LeVier poked a two-run double to make it 4-0. The Cougars' final two runs came in the sixth and were unearned from a Kernels error.
Smith (6-0) faced the minimum in five of his six innings and gave up three hits, walked none and fanned three in the win. It was his seventh quality start in 11 tries, and the Cougars are 11-0 in games he starts. Connor Hoehn gave up single runs in the seventh and eighth for the 6-2 final, with Jose Guzman facing three batters in the ninth to end it. The Cougars (23-16, 55-53) and Kernels (21-17, 64-42) conclude the four-game set Friday night at 7 CT. Jonathan Joseph (1-3, 4.63) is scheduled to face Max Russell (0-1, 9.00).
