Captains Continue Dominating Dragons

Eastlake, Ohio- Roberto Perez and Jason Smit both connected on two-run home runs as the Lake County Captains defeated the Dayton Dragons 6-1 on Thursday night. The Captains have won the first three games of the four-game series.

Lake County starting pitcher Giovanni Soto, in just his second game since being acquired by the Cleveland Indians organization from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for major leaguer Jhonny Peralta, tossed six strong innings to earn the win. He allowed only two hits and one run with two walks and four strikeouts.

The Captains took a 2-0 lead when Perez homered with a runner on base in the second inning. It was his fifth home run of the year.

The Dragons scored their only run of the night in the third when Jonathan Kaskow was hit by a pitch, went to second on Kevyn Feiner's sacrifice, and scored on Ryan LaMarre's single to left field to make it 2-1.

But Lake County's Delvi Cid led off the bottom of the third with a home run, his second of the season, to give the Captains a 3-1 lead. Smit belted a two-run shot in the fourth, his seventh homer of the season, to make it 5-1. The Captains added a single run in the eighth to close out the scoring.

Dragons starting pitcher Ricky Bowen fell to 2-6 with the loss. He allowed five hits including three home runs over four innings, surrendering five earned runs with three walks and one strikeout.

Pedro Villarreal worked three scoreless innings for the Dragons, allowing two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Blaine Howell, in his first game with the Dragons since being promoted from Billings, worked an inning, allowing one run.

Dayton finished with just four hits. LaMarre, Kaskow, Didi Gregorius, and Henry Rodriguez each had one. Mark Fleury's 10-game hitting streak came to an end with a 0 for 4 night.

The Dragons (9-29) play at Lake County (19-20) in the last game of the seven-game road trip on Friday at 7:00 p.m. Jacob Johnson (5-6, 4.33) will start for Dayton against Trey Haley (5-6, 5.38). The next home game for the Dragons is Saturday night when they host West Michigan at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field.
