Bowling Green, KY - Kirby Yates threw six solid innings and Jake Sullivan got the Hot Rods out of a sticky jam in the eighth inning as Bowling Green snapped a three-game losing streak to beat South Bend 6-4 on Thursday night. Partnered with a loss by the Lansing Lugnuts, the Hot Rods are now just two games out of the playoff chase in the Midwest League Eastern Division.

South Bend opened the scoring for the third straight game in the top of the first inning against Yates. With two outs, Bobby Borchering hammered a 1-2 pitch over the right field wall for a home run and a 1-0 South Bend lead. The Hot Rods wasted no time in putting together potential rallies to tie the game in the next two innings, but they stranded runners at the corners in each frame.

It was in the third that they finally broke through against South Bend starter Diogenes Rosario. Ty Morrison and Tyler Bortnick each singled to right to once again put runners at the corners. This time, with nobody out, Ryan Wiegand singled to center to score one run. Brett Nommensen followed with a sliced single to left to plate Bortnick. Two batters later, Julio Cedeno struck again for a single to center to plate the final two runs of the inning for a 4-1 Hot Rods lead.

An inning later they pieced together two more runs. With one out, the red-hot Morrison tripled into the right field corner before Bortnick drew a walk. After Bortnick stole second, Wiegand drove home Morrison with a sacrifice fly to center field. Bortnick took third on the fly ball before scoring on a passed ball to push the Hot Rods lead to 6-1.

South Bend added solo runs in the fifth and sixth before Yates left the game after six full innings. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out three. He snapped a personal three-game losing streak to improve to 3-6 on the season and 3-4 as a starting pitcher. He also earned his first win at Bowling Green Ballpark.

The Hot Rods bullpen did make it interesting in the eighth inning before earning the win. With one out, Deivis Mavarez was working in his second inning of relief when he hit Borchering and then gave up consecutive singles to Matt Davidson and Ramon Castillo to load the bases. Mavarez would walk the next batter, Errol Hollinger, on four pitchers to force in a run and cut the Hot Rods lead to 6-4.

Andrew Fie followed Hollinger and was quickly given two straight balls before Mavarez was lifted in favor of Jake Sullivan. The lefty casually came on and retired Fie on one pitch before inducing an inning-ending groundout from Victor Estevez. He then worked a perfect ninth for his second save of the season.

Morrison and Cedeno led the Hot Rods offense on another robust night. All nine guys reached base combining for ten hits, three walks, two hit batters, and four stolen bases. Morrison had a triple, a single, and scored two runs to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Bortnick was 2-3 with a walk, a steal, and two runs scored to push his streak to eight games as well. Cedeno continued to tear the cover off the ball on the home stand, going 1-4 with two runs batted in. He has hit safely in all six games of the stand, racking up 10 hits and 8 RBI.
