Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
LANSING, Mich. - The TinCaps erupted for a seven-run seventh inning on their way to an 11-5 win over the Lansing Lugnuts, Thursday at Cooley Law School Stadium. Jonathan Galvez had two hits including a key two-run double.
The win was Fort Wayne's fourth in a row, securing a series win against the Lugnuts, another playoff contender. The TinCaps pounded out 17 hits. Jedd Gyorko went 4-for-5 and scored three times.
It was another back-and-forth battle in the early going. Fort Wayne took the lead in the top of the second on back-to-back RBI singles by Jeudy Valdez and Griffin Benedict.
Lansing tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning when Kevin Ahrens lined a two-out, two-run single to center.
The TinCaps came right back when Danny Payne started the top of the fifth with a home run to make it 4-3. Lansing tied it an inning later on a two-out RBI double by A.J. Jimenez.
The floodgates opened in the top of the seventh. Wande Olabisi was hit by a pitch, touching off a streak of seven straight TinCaps to reach base. Nate Freiman, Gyorko and Valdez had consecutive RBI singles, then Benedict flared a double down the left-field line to make it 8-4. Galvez followed with a two-run double into the left-field corner to push the lead to six runs. Two batters later, Dean Anna looped a run-scoring single to right, capping the seven-run outburst.
Lansing scored its final run in the seventh. Ryan Schimpf tripled and scored on Justin Jackson's RBI groundout.
LHP Jeff Ibarra (1-1) picked up the win. Lansing RHP Brian Slover (3-5) took the loss.
Fort Wayne upped its record to 23-16 in the half, 59-50 for the season. The Lugnuts dipped to 20- 19 in the second half, 56-52 for the year.
The TinCaps finish the four-game series against the Lugnuts (Class-A Toronto Blue Jays) Friday at Cooley Law School Stadium at 7:05 p.m. Fort Wayne RHP Jerry Sullivan (7-4) gets the starting nod against Lansing LHP Egan Smith (4-1).
