Utah Grizzlies News Release
West Valley City, Utah - The Stockton Thunder defeated the Utah Grizzlies 3-2 in a shootout Friday night at Maverik Center.
Utah is now unbeaten in regulation in eight of their last nine games and 5-1-1-2 since Christmas. Utah battled back down 1-0 and 2-1 in the game and had a two minute four-on-three power-play in overtime, but they were unable to score despite some great chances.
"We've had a good run here since Christmas and we play the same good team tomorrow, so hopefully we have that same effort and come out with a different outcome," said Grizzlies Head Coach/General Manager Tim Branham. "Definitely proud of the effort, we're resilient and we've got a good team, we definitely do. We've got guys that work hard and play the right way and it's fun to see, it's fun to coach them that's for sure."
Utah fell behind 1-0 1:04 into the first period, but tied the contest 8:02 later at 9:06. Gentry Zollars, in his first game with Utah, led the puck up ice and then setup the second chance for Vinny Scarsella for his fifth goal of the year. Danick Paquette also picked up an assist. "I saw one guy breaking so I gave him a pass," said Zollars on his pass to Jelitto up ice. "I like to fall off the play, luckily it went to my stick and I saw Scarsella wide open in the slot; so I gave him a little shot pass and he had a nice tip and it went right over the goalie and into the net."
45 seconds after Stockton made it 2-1 with 1:34 left in the second, Utah came back the other way as D.J. Jelitto led a three-on-two and Mike Folkes knocked in a Scarsella rebound for his first professional overtime.
"I'm proud of the guys efforts tonight, we played fairly well," said Branham. "We worked real hard and saw a lot of good things out there and saw some things we need to work on."
Stockton won the shootout 2-0, scoring on their first two shots.
Cody Reichard stopped 24 of 26 shots through overtime in goal for Utah.
Saturday is Star Wars Night and the next post-game Skate with the Grizzlies. Skate Rental is $2. Face-off with Stockton is against at 7 p.m.
