Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, NY - The Elmira Jackals were shouldered with their second loss of the weekend as the Reading Royals defeated them 4-2 at First Arena on Saturday night. The loss dipped Elmira's record to 10-18-4 on the season.
The Royals jumped out of the gate and claimed the lead on their second shot of the game. Matt Campanale uncorked a wrist shot from the left wing circle that beat Elmira's Maxime Clermont high to the glove side just 1:26 into the contest. The goal was Campanale's third of the year and came with assists from Ryan Cruthers and Marvin Degon. Elmira had two great chances to tie it later in the period but Kyle Bushee rang a slap shot off the post and Danny Hobbs was stopped on a breakaway by Reading's Brandon Anderson.
The Jackals built off of their solid chances in the first and used the momentum to create a pair of goals in the second period. Kyle Bushee joined the rush and took a pass from Rob Bellamy in the high slot in good scoring position. His wrist shot beat Anderson high to the glove side 6:51 into the second and knotted the score at one. Reading's Yannick Tifu scored a creative goal at 18:13 to restore Reading's lead. Working from the left wing corner, Tifu banked a shot off the back of Clermont and across the line for his eighth goal of the season. Elmira answered right back one minute later as Patch Alber scored his third of the year off the rush to send Elmira into the third period tied at two. Jake Trask and Mike Vaskivuo picked up assists for their first points as Jackals.
In the final stanza the Jackals were given a chance to seize control for the first time with an early power play. The man-advantage opportunity produced three shots for the home side (all of which were good scoring chances), but Anderson slammed the door each time. Reading then scored a pair of goals 22 seconds apart to take its biggest lead of the night. Tifu scored the eventual winner with a 15-foot shot at 11:05 then helped set up Cruthers' insurance marker on the very next shift. Elmira pulled Clermont, to no avail, with 1:34 left to play in regulation.
Clermont stopped 25 of the 29 shots he faced in the loss. Elmira was 4-for-4 on the penalty kill and 0-for-2 on the power play.
