West Valley City, Utah - Despite 22, third period shots, the Steelheads could not erase a three-goal, third period deficit, as they fell to the Utah Grizzlies, 6-5, on Tuesday night at the E-Center.

With the defeat, the Steelheads (18-7-2) complete their four-game road swing with a 3-1-0 mark, while maintaining a two-point lead over the Grizzlies (17-10-2) for third place in the West Division.

The first period saw Trevor Baker bury two special teams goals for the Grizzlies in a span of 1:35. Louis Dumont and Ryan Kinasewich assisted on Baker's power play goal at 2:33, while his shorthanded goal at 4:08 of the frame, was setup again by Kinasewich.

Steelheads' defenseman Jonathan Zion cut the deficit to 2-1 with just 58 seconds left in the first period with his eighth goal of the season. Forwards D'Arcy McConvey and Garett Bembridge chipped in the assists. All three players who picked up points on the goal extended their scoring streaks. Zion now has an eight-game scoring streak (13 pts.), while McConvey (14 pts.) and Bembridge (18 pts.) have recorded at least one point in seven consecutive contests.

The Steelheads were out-shot 17-8 in the opening 20 minutes, and trailed 2-1.

The Grizzlies extended their lead when Dumont cashed in his eighth tally of the season at 5:41 of the second period. Baker and Kinasewich gathered the assists on the even-strength goal.

Just 1:28 after the home team made the score 3-1, forward Marty Flichel got the Steelheads back to within a goal. Flichel converted on the man advantage with Bembridge and McConvey again getting the assists. Flichel found himself alone in the left circles against Grizzlies' netminder Justin Eddy (34 saves), who had lost his goalstick. Flichel made a move to his backhand and lifted the puck over Eddy to make the score 3-2.

After hard work in the Steelheads defensive zone, the Grizzlies were able to regain their two-goal lead. Forward Travis Rycroft dug the puck free from behind the net and fed Dumont in the slot. Dumont's shot was stopped by Steve Silverthorn (33 saves), but Rycroft poked home the rebound.

Minutes later, with the Grizzlies on a two-man advantage, the home team struck again as Ed Hill got his second goal of the season on a point shot. Silverthorn was screened on Hill's shot, as Baker recorded the only assist.

With the score 5-2 after two periods, the Steelheads climbed back in the third period, as Zion collected his second of the match, netting a power play goal at 8:02. Flichel and Bembridge got the assists.

Kinasewich scored at 12:36 to make it 6-3, as Hill drew the lone helper. Two Steelheads players chased Hill into the near side corner and he shoveled a pass to the uncovered Kinasewich who pushed the puck past Silverthorn for the power play goal.

Flichel rocketed home a shot from the left circles to make the score 6-4 with just over four minutes left in regulation. It was a man advantage marker; the team's third of the game, with the assists going to McConvey and Zion.

McConvey made it a one-goal game with 2:02 left in the contest as he snapped a shot into the top shelf over Eddy. Bembridge registered his fourth assist of the game on the goal, while forward Justin Cox picked up the other assist. At the time of the goal, Silverthorn was at the Steelheads' bench for an extra attacker.

The Steelheads, however, could not find the equalizer in the game's final minutes, and the Grizzlies hung on for their first regulation win of the season versus the Steelheads. With one meeting left in the season series, the Steelheads hold a 4-1-1 mark against the Grizzlies.

The final shots were even at 39, as Silverthorn (10-4-0) fell for the first time in his last five starts. Eddy got the victory, his seventh of the campaign.

On Thursday, December 29, the Steelheads return home to tangle with the San Diego Gulls for the first time this season. The puck drops at 7:10 p.m. MST.
