Utah Grizzlies News Release
West Valley City, Utah - The Utah Grizzlies (2-1-1-0) rallied down 4-1 and down 5-3 in the third period to earn a standings point in a 6-5 overtime loss to Allen (4-2) Saturday night at Maverik Center before 5,029 fans.
"The work that those guys did in front of the net - they battled hard," said Head Coach/General Tim Branham. "To keep those pucks in and never say die, it was great. That's what it takes to win. No team is easy to play against and I'm definitely proud of the way the boys battled back."
Utah tied the game at 5 with 29 seconds left in regulation as they cashed in with an extra attacker as Ryan Walters got another goal after making it 5-4 just past the halfway point of the third period.
"I wanted a team that was fast paced and if we were going to lose, we were going to lose 6-5," said Branham. "I think it makes for exciting hockey."
The Grizzlies got back in the game by scoring two goals in 37 seconds in the final four minutes of the second period to make a 4-1 deficit 4-3 with Kenny Ryan and Matt Berry both scoring.
"I think the boys are playing well," said Branham. "I see a lot of areas we can improve, but in a lot of areas, we're playing great."
Allen made it 5-3 on a shot from the perimeter in the first minute of the third period.
Utah tied the game 32 seconds after falling behind 1-0 in the first period as Barry Almeida and Ryan Walters got the puck to Kenny Ryan for his first goal of the night before Allen rolled off three-straight goals, including two on the power-play to take a 4-1 lead.
"Battling back from 4-1 is tremendous," said Branham. "We haven't done too much of that in the last couple of years. We've got guys that can put the puck in the net. We've got guys that can push the pace. It's just a matter of putting it all together and playing smarter defensively."
Allen drew five of the first six power-plays and six of nine on the game as the Grizzlies battled penalty issues.
Barry Almeida (three assists), Ryan Walters (two goals, two assists) and Matt Berry (one goal) have now scored in all four games this season.
Kenny Ryan scored Utah's first two goals and finished with two goals and one assist.
Eric Levine started in goal for Utah as Ducks prospect Ryan Faragher missed his second-straight game under the weather.
Allen won the game in three-on-three overtime with a breakaway 32 seconds in.
Utah is next in action Friday in Idaho at 7 p.m.
