Grizzlies Close Season with Shutout Win, Sellout Crowd
April 7, 2018 - ECHL (ECHL)
Utah Grizzlies News Release
West Valley City, Utah - The Utah Grizzlies shutout the Kansas City Mavericks 2-0 Saturday night at Maverik Center before 10,200 fans to close out the 2017-2018 season.
The sellout was the Grizzlies second of the season and their fourth-straight crowd of over 7,000 as they finished the year fifth in the 27-team ECHL with an average attendance of 5,666 fans-per-game.
"We came out and had an entertaining game for the fans," said Branham. "Our fans have come out every game this season and given us great support."
Utah finished the season with the weekend sweep of the Mavericks after a 6-5 overtime win on Friday.
Goaltender Joel Rumpel stopped all 35 shots in the win to finish the season with a 20-13-2-2 record as he earned his first shutout of the year.
"Definitely give the boys props for making it an entertaining weekend," said Branham. "I thought Joel Rumpel had an excellent game today and made some huge saves that kept us in the game."
The Grizzlies took a 1-0 lead 7:28 into the first period as Jake Marchment (18) picked up a puck on the side of the net and tucked it home with Charley Graaskamp and Taylor Richart drawing assists.
Sam Babintsev (4) made it 2-0 as he knocked in a rebound on a Kyle Thomas shot with 6:45 left in the second period as Gage Ausmus also picked up an assist.
"Obviously it's a disappointing season for us and it's a season that's unacceptable for this organization," said Branham. "Not making the playoffs is not acceptable. We have had good stretches, but at the end of the day we didn't get the job done and we just have to make sure that it doesn't happen again."
