Griffins Tame Wolves, 7-4

Rosemont, Ill. - The Grand Rapids Griffins (36-15-8-2) climbed to within one point of the Western Conference-leading Houston Aeros with a 7-4 win over the Chicago Wolves (28-22-7-3) at the Allstate Arena on Wednesday night. The Griffins improved their road record to 19-4-3-2 (0.768) in road games.

Former Wolves forward Bryan Adams opened the scoring for the Griffins when he took a drop pass from Ryan Barnes and tucked a shot inside the left goal post past his former teammate Norm Maracle at 8:18 of the opening period. Stacy Roest also assisted on the play.

Sean Avery tallied a power play goal at 17:07 from Philippe Plante and Mark Mowers. Avery has nine points in nine games with the Griffins.

Plante made the score 3-0 when he slid a shot between Maracle's legs at 1:22 of the second period. Roest and Derek King assisted on the goal.

Chicago's Ryan Tobler cut the margin to 3-1 with an unassisted goal at 3:16 of the middle frame.

King would regain the Griffins' three-goal lead when he notched his eleventh goal of the season, a power play goal at 4:06 of the second period. Travis Richards and Jason Williams assisted.

Kurtis Foster blasted a power play goal past Marc Lamothe at 5:04 of the second period. Rob Brown and Andreas Karlsson assisted.

Tomas Kopecky hit Roest with a pass, sending Roest on a breakaway. Roest shot the puck through Maracle's five-hole, expanding the lead to 5-2 at 11:03 of the second period.

Derek MacKenzie cut into the Griffins' lead early in the third period with a goal at 2:28 from Jeff Farkas.

The Griffins scored their third power play tally with a two-man advantage when Kopecky tapped in a loose puck at 6:22 of the third period. Williams and Roest assisted on the goal.

Plante would extend the Griffins' lead to 7-3 with an empty net unassisted shorthanded goal at 19:22.

Zdenek Blatny answered with a power play goal at 19:42 from Ben Simon and Garney Exelby.

Lamothe made 36 saves for his league-leading 25th win, while Norm Maracle suffered the loss.

The Griffins close out February with a game at the SBC Center in San Antonio at 8:00 p.m. on Friday.
