Saint John Flames News Release

SAINT JOHN, NB - The Saint John Flames (22-31-5-1), American Hockey League affiliate of the National Hockey League's Calgary Flames, skated to a 2-2- tie with the Portland Pirates (28-20-8-5) at Harbour Station Wednesday. The Eastern Conference rivals were meeting for the seventh of ten schedule meetings this season.

The Flames opened the scoring at 10:57 of the first period on Matt Lombardi's team leading 18th goal of the season. The goal, on the powerplay, was assisted by Mike Mottau and Mike Martin. The Pirates responded in the second with goals at 8:02 (Even Strength) and 11:13 (PowerPlay) from Josef Boumedienne (9th) and Trent Whitfield (23rd) respectively.

Portland started the third period with the 2-1 lead. At the 7:49 point of the third, referee Chris Lee, for the second time this season, awarded a penalty shot to the Flames judging that Matt Lombardi had been duly interfered with while on a breakaway. The teams carried on until the 13:43 point when Ryan Christie notched his 9th of the seaosn from Lombardi and Mrozik to tie the game at 2's.

The period would end that way and overtime would solve nothing.

The FLames tied their season single game high for penalty minutes with 45 for the game while Portland, with 71, posted the highest PIM total by an opponent for the Flames this season. The combined total of 116 PIMs was also a season high for the Flames.

Saint John was 1 for 4 with the man advantage while Portland struggled going 1 for 8.

Pirates netminder Maxime Ouellet with 36 saves was selected as the games First Star while Flames Matt Lombardi (1g, 1a) and Mike Mottau were selected Second and Third star respectively.

The Flames are on the road tonight visiting Portland for an 8:05 p.m. (Atlantic time) start and Friday, February 28 at 7:30 p.m. versus the Manitoba Moose at Harbour Station.
