Phantoms donate $2,300 to Jennifer Ferraro Fund
February 26, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release
(PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 26, 2003) - Philadelphia Phantoms players, coaches, wives and staff recently collected $2,300 out of their own pockets to donate to the Jennifer Ferraro Fund for gastric cancer research.
Jennifer Ferraro was the wife of Portland Pirates center and co-captain Chris Ferraro who passed away on Nov. 5, 2002 after a 13-month battle with stomach cancer. The fund was established in her memory to benefit gastric cancer research at Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York and the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Md., where she was treated.
"My wife and I learned about Chris' situation while watching the AHL All-Star Game in Portland," said Phantoms head coach John Stevens. "This is a player in our industry - one of our own - and we felt it was necessary to help out. Hopefully this will create some awareness so other teams can jump on board too."
Philadelphia captains Mark Greig, John Slaney and David Harlock presented the check to Chris Ferraro after the Pirates-Phantoms game at the First Union Spectrum on Feb. 19.
"It was a very nice surprise," said Chris Ferraro. "The support I have received from family, friends and the hockey community at large is what helps me and my family endure and persevere. Frankly, it's difficult not to become emotional when you accept such a generous gift from people who you're supposed to be competitive with, but it reminds you of what is most important in life. The Phantoms' donation to the Jennifer Ferraro Fund only adds to the great reputation of the entire Philadelphia organization."
Philadelphia is back in action at the First Union Spectrum on Sunday, March 2 at 6:05 p.m. vs. the Manchester Monarchs. The first 4,000 fans in attendance will receive a Justin Williams bobblehead doll.
Tickets to all Phantoms home games are $18, $17 and $13 for adults, and $8 for all children 14 and under, and are available now at the First Union Center box office and all Ticketmaster locations throughout the Delaware Valley. Tickets can also be charged by phone by calling (215) 336-2000 or (856) 338-9000 or online at www.ticketmaster.com. Contact the Phantoms office at 215-465-4522 for information on group discounts, birthday packages and the Family Four Pack.
