Checkers Make Moves Prior To ECHL Trading Deadline

Charlotte, NC - Wednesday, February 26, 2003: The Charlotte Checkers made several moves just ahead of the ECHL's trading deadline today at 3:00 p.m. The Checkers traded right wing Vince Malts to the Augusta Lynx for forward/defenseman Doug Christiansen, and future considerations which will include a player to be named later. Charlotte also released goaltender Jeff Salajko, and the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes assigned goalie Colin Zulianello to the Checkers. The moves were announced today by Checkers Head Coach & General Manager Don MacAdam.

"We lost two quality individuals and players in Vince and Jeff," said MacAdam. "There were reasons why we made these moves and we know we'll be a better team as a result. Both were quality members of our hockey team and we wish them well."

Malts had 11 goals and 18 assists for 29 points in 40 games with 139 penalty minutes for the Checkers. Salajko was 6-8-1 with a 3.67 GAA and .878 save percentage for Charlotte. The Checkers will be Christiansen's fourth ECHL team this season. He has played for the Mississippi Sea Wolves, Columbia Inferno and Augusta Lynx where he had no goals, eight assists for eight points and 39 penalty minutes in 49 games. Zulianello played in 19 games in goal for Augusta with a 6-10-1 record and a 3.50 GAA and .897 save percentage. Zulianello also played one game this season for the Springfield Falcons of the AHL.

The Checkers are 2-1-0 on their current six-game roadtrip, and will head to the Northeast this weekend for a crucial game Friday night with the Trenton Titans. Saturday night and Sunday afternoon the Checkers will take on Atlantic City at Boardwalk Hall.
