Great Home Stand Continues with Fourth Win
June 1, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Winnipeg Goldeyes got themselves one great start and one great inning and cruised to their fourth straight win.
Friday night in front of 5,095 at Shaw Park, starter Fabian Williamson allowed just one run on four hits over 6.2 innings and the Goldeyes potent lineup put up six runs in the fifth as Winnipeg beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats 6-1.
With the win, Winnipeg won its fourth straight game, took the first game of a three-game weekend series with Gary, improved to 10-3 on the season and remained in first place in the American Association's North Division.
"I just felt like that was the most important start of my career," said Williamson, the 23-year-old lefty from Panorama City, Cal. "I just wanted to contribute to this team and I had to get a win just to prove that I can do things for the club and the people who watch."
While Williamson got the win to improve to 1-2, he also lowered his earned run average to 5.28 (he went with an 8.31 ERA). It certainly helped that his teammates exploded in the fifth.
Luis Alen led off the inning with a single, went to second when Amos Ramon walked and then went to third when Ridge Carpenter walked. After David Narodowski flied out to shallow right field, Price Kendall singled home Alen from the third with the first run of the game.
With the bases still loaded, Chris Roberson walked to drive home Ramon with Winnipeg's second run and then Jon Weber singled to score Ridge Carpenter. Yurendell de Caster then hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Kendall and then Dan Barbero hit a flare to right that dropped for a single and plated Roberson and Weber.
That's all Williamson and the Goldeyes needed.
"It's funny, but in Amarillo and Laredo, when I lost, I felt really good but things just didn't go my way," Williamson said. "It's just the way it goes sometimes. Tonight, I had real good command and my curveball and cutter were my best pitches. I didn't try to strike anyone out tonight and I had five strikeouts. It's just the way it goes."
Game time for the middle game in the series is 6 p.m. tomorrow night and tickets are available at Ticketmaster. The game can also be heard on TSN Sports Radio 1290. Paul Edmonds will have the pre-game show at 4:30 p.m.
