Sioux City Explorers News Release
Sioux City - The Explorers lost their fifth straight Friday, dropping an 8-5 decision to Fargo-Moorhead at Lewis and Clark Park. The Red Hawks put the game away early as they scored five runs in the first inning, sending nine batters to the plate off Sioux City and losing hurler Max Whieldon (1-1). That would all the runs that Fargo-Moorhead starter and winner Alex Caldera (3-0) would really need. The Explorers did score two unearned runs off releif pitcher Joe Harris in the ninth to make the final score 8-5 as the Red Hawks snapped a four-game losing streak. Sioux City relief hurler Ty Marotz came in the game in the second inning and pitched 5 2/3 innings, his longest outing of the season to save the Explorers bullpen. Fargo-Moorhead had eight of their nine hitters in the lineup hit safely as the Red Hawks struck for 14 hits in the contest. Rookie Buddy Sosnoskie led the hit attack with three hits in his first professional game. The Explorers had eight hits led by Ray Serrano who had two hits, the only Sioux City hitter to have more than one hit. With the loss, the Explorers drop to 5-9 for the season while Fargo-Moorhead goes to 6-8. The second game of the three-game series will be Saturday with game time set for 7:05 and fireworks will be held after the game.
