Pheasants Nipped by Lincoln

Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

SIOUX FALLS-- The Sioux Falls Pheasants couldn't overcome a six-run fifth inning by the Lincoln Saltdogs and fell, 10-5, Friday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.

The big inning was led by A.J. Miller's three-run double and Joe Spiers' RBI single, giving the Saltdogs a 9-1 cushion.

The Pheasants tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning on a Jonny Kaplan single, but Lincoln took the lead right back in the fourth. John Alonso hit an RBI single and came home on a based-loaded walk to give the Saltdogs a 3-1 lead that they never lost.

Pheasants starter Mark Michael (1-2) suffered the loss. He lasted six innings, allowing nine runs, eight earned, on 13 hits. Michael yielded only one run in the first three innings, but couldn't keep his control in the middle frames.

"When you throw it up where he's throwing it, they usually hit it hard, which they did," said Pheasants manager Steve Shirley. "When he's low in the zone, he seems to be able to make pitches and get results."

The Pheasants have allowed five or more runs in an inning on six different occasions this season.

"The fact of the matter is that it doesn't really matter [who is starting], at this point we're giving up five and six in one inning, and that's not acceptable. We can't win baseball games when we do that," added Shirley.

Jonny Kaplan led the Pheasants offense, extending his hitting streak to 14-games. He tripled and went 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Al Quintana and Mark Shorey each had multi-hit nights. Quintana doubled twice and drove in a run.

Justin Edwards (1-0) earned the win for the Saltdogs. He tossed six innings, allowing three runs on six hits and struck out five.

Game three of the four-game series against Saltdogs is at 6:05 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, at Sioux Falls Stadium.
