Grand Prairie AirHogs News Release
WICHITA, Kan. Iowa -- Ryan Khoury hit a sacrifice fly with one out in the ninth inning to bring in David Peralta with the winning run as the Wichita Wingnuts nipped the Grand Prairie AirHogs 6-5 on Friday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
The win was the ninth straight for the Wingnuts (11-3), who got the winning rally started when Peralta singled off Griffin Bailey (0-2) to start the bottom of the ninth. After Zane Chavez could not get Peralta at second on Taylor Freeman's bunt, Steve Carrillo struck out but the runners moved up on a double steal to second and third.
Up came Khoury, who took a strike and then lined one to shallow left-center. Keanon Simon made the play and threw home, but Peralta beat the throw to win the game.
Andres Rodriguez gave the AirHogs (8-6) the lead with a solo home run leading off the second, and it quickly became 2-0 after Greg Porter singled and Brian Myrow doubled him home. A groundout by David Thomas and a Chavez sacrifice fly made it 3-0, but the Wingnuts came right back in the bottom half against Lance Janke.
With one out, the Wingnuts rapped out two singles and two doubles to tie the game, and Jake Kahaulelio's two-out, two-run infield single made it 5-3 Wichita. Janke shrugged off that inning in the rest of his outing, as he did not allow a baserunner again until a pair of walks in the seventh, retiring 13 in a row before departing with two on and two out in the seventh. He struck out a season-high 10 and walked three, allowing just the five-run second on the five hits given up that frame.
The AirHogs battled back to tie the game off Wingnuts starter Jose Perez, getting a run in the fourth on a Myrow home run and one more on a Rodriguez sacrifice fly in the fifth, but they only had one other hit after that, and the Wingnuts pitchers retired 15 of the last 16 AirHogs - with Nick Walters (two innings) and Edgar Martinez (1-0) (one inning) relieving Perez.
Notes: Wingnuts manager Kevin Hooper and hitting/first base coach Jose Amado were both ejected in the bottom of the fourth. Peralta took exception to a called second strike against him, and stepped out of the batter's box. Home plate umpire Art Thigpen ordered him back in, and when Peralta refused, he told Janke to pitch. He then called strike three on Peralta, and Hooper and Amado were ejected for immediately arguing...Rodriguez, Porter and Myrow had six of the AirHogs' seven hits...Simon (13) and Trent Lockwood (10) each had long on-base streaks end.
