St. Paul Saints News Release
NEWARK, NJ (June 1, 2012) - Put up a crooked number early, hand the ball to one of your better pitchers and that's the perfect recipe for a victory as the St. Paul Saints defeated the Newark Bears 6-3 on Friday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
As the Saints did in the first game of this 10 game roadtrip they put up a big number early in the game with a four spot in the second inning. Tanner Townsend led off with a walk and, on a hit and run, Ronnie Bourquin knocked him home with a double to left giving the Saints a 1-0 lead. Benji Johnson hit a grounder to third, but Burt Reynolds' throw to first went into the stands allowing Bourquin to score and sending Johnson to second. Adam Frost ripped an RBI double scoring Johnson to give the Saints a 3-0 lead. The Saints finished the scoring on an RBI double by Jose Hernandez to make it 4-0.
That was all Saints starter Wes Roemer needed. Hits were at a minimum against Roemer for most of the game. He hit a batter to lead off the second and then with two outs gave up an RBI single to Juan Martinez to cut the lead to 4-1. Roemer would give up just one more hit until the seventh. He gave up a solo home run to Eric McGee to make it 6-2 and then finally left the ball game in the eighth with two outs. Roemer went 7.2 innings allowing three runs on six hits while striking out seven to earn his second win of the season.
The Saints got an RBI single from Tanner Townsend in the third and a solo home run from Johnson, his first of the season, in the sixth, to finish off their scoring.
The same two teams meet in game two of the three game series Saturday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Ballpark. The Saints send RHP Danny Gutierrez (0-0, 1.80) against Bears RHP Pedro Rivera (1-1, 0.69). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
