Wingnuts Pull out Ninth Consecutive Win

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts tied a franchise record with their ninth consecutive win, beating the Grand Prairie AirHogs 6-5 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Friday night.

Tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth, David Peralta singled up the middle to lead off. Taylor Freeman beat out a sacrifice bunt attempt when catcher Zane Chavez tried to force out the lead runner at second base. With runners on first and second, a swinging third strike to Steve Carrillo snuck through Chavez's legs to move the winning run to third base. Ryan Khoury drove in Peralta from third with a sacrifice fly to center. Peralta slid in just ahead of center fielder Keanon Simon's throw.

Grand Prairie jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against Wingnuts' starter Jose Perez. Andres Rodriguez led off the top of the second with a home run to left field. Greg Porter followed with a single to left and scored from first on a hit-and-run double to left-center from Brian Myrow. Myrow took third on David Thomas' groundout to second, and scored on Chavez's sacrifice fly.

Wichita answered right back with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Mitch Einertson started the rally with a one-out single to center. C.J. Ziegler lined a double to right-center to score Einertson and cut the AirHogs' lead to 3-1. Peralta singled to third, setting up an RBI double from Taylor Freeman that made it 3-2. After Mike Conroy walked to load the bases, Khoury tied the game on a groundout to second base. With second and third and two outs, Jake Kahaulelio beat out an infield single on a groundball to shortstop. Freeman scored the go-ahead run, while Conroy scored all the way from second on the same play.

Myrow hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth to trim Wichita's lead to 5-4. Rodriguez re-tied it with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Nick Walters threw two shutout innings in relief of Perez to keep the game tied. Edgar Martinez earned the win after throwing a perfect top of the ninth.

Perez took a no-decision, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits in six innings of work. Perez walked one and struck out four.

AirHogs' starter Lance Janke also took a no-decision, allowing five earned runs on five hits in six and two-thirds. Janke walked three and struck out 10.

Griffin Bailey took the loss for Grand Prairie, allowing one earned run in one-third of an inning.

Ziegler extended his hitting streak to eight games in a row with his double in the second.
