El Paso Diablos News Release
LAREDO, TX- The Diablos could not hold leads of 8-2 and 10-8 as the Laredo Lemurs came from behind twice to defeat El Paso in 12 innings in the first ever meeting between the two teams.
The loss drops El Paso to 3-11 on the season and moves the Lemurs up to 6-8 in 2012.
At the outset, the Diablos appeared well on their way to the team's first two-game winning streak of the season. El Paso jumped out to leads of 6-1 and 8-2, largely in thanks to a five-run top of the third. Palmer Karr Jr. and Brian Joynt each had two-RBI hits in the frame, supporting Diablos starter Reymond Cruz, who threw six solid innings and was poised for his first win of the season.
It was not to be, however, as the Lemurs rallied to tie the game at eight apiece with five runs of their own in the seventh. The biggest hit of the inning for Laredo was the two-run single by Stephen Pearson that knotted the game.
The two teams then traded zeroes for four innings before El Paso finally broke through in the top of the 12th. Maikol Gonzalez's RBI single produced a play at the plate between base runner Jonathan Cisneros and Lemurs catcher Brian Peterson. Cisneros barrelled into Peterson, jarring the ball loose and giving the Diablos a 9-8 lead.
El Paso would add an insurance run before handing the ball back to reliever Marcel Prado (0-1), who had thrown two scoreless innings in extras already. The Lemurs fought back, however, tying the game on another clutch single from Pearson and walking off on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jeff Vincent.
The three-run 12th made a winner of Lemurs reliever Garrett Sherrill (2-0), who earned his second victory by getting the final two outs in the top half of the inning.
The Diablos will resume play tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. (MST) in game two of the series with Laredo. Right-hander Scott Hodsdon is scheduled to make his first start for the Diablos since returning from a one-game suspension.
