June 1, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts announced several transactions on Friday, including the signing of third baseman Juan Richardson.
The Wingnuts also traded third baseman Jared McDonald to the Lincoln Saltdogs in exchange for cash, released catcher Salomon Manriquez, signed right-handed pitcher Robert Roth, and learned that closer Josh Dew has signed with the Mexican League's Monclova Steelers.
Richardson hit .360 for the Wingnuts last season with 12 home runs and 86 RBI in 98 games played. Richardson finished fourth in the American Association in batting average, fifth in RBI, second in on-base percentage (.452), and first in fielding percentage among all third basemen (.951). A native of Bani in the Dominican Republic, Richardson was voted to the American Association's 2011 Postseason All-Star team, and was named to Baseball America's All-Independent Leagues team. Now in his 14th season of professional baseball, Richardson has 1,218 base hits in 1,204 career games played.
Roth enters his sixth season of professional baseball with a lifetime 15-17 record, and a 5.49 ERA. Roth opened last season with the North American League's McAllen Thunder where he had a 3.48 ERA in 15 appearances. Roth was then purchased by the Atlanta Braves' organization and split time with Low-A Rome and High-A Lynchburg over the final months of the season. Roth was originally drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 19th round in 2006, and has averaged 7.0 strikeouts per nine innings in his career.
Dew did not allow an earned run in five appearances over four and one-third innings. The right-hander had four saves and is currently the Wingnuts' all-time leader in that category with 24.
The Wingnuts have won eight consecutive games and begin a seven-game homestand tonight against the Grand Prairie AirHogs at 6:05 p.m. Individual tickets can be purchased by calling (316) 755-SEAT, or by visiting www.selectaseat.com
