Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes saw their second-half record improve to 17-5 tonight with a dramatic 6-5 win over the Schaumburg Flyers before a sold out CanWest Global Park crowd of 7,564.

Harry Berrios (3-5, HR, 2B, R, 2 RBI) hit a walk-off solo home run off Brett Weber with two out in the bottom of the tenth to make a winner of Rodney Dickinson. Weber fell to 4-2 with the loss while Dickinson improved to 2-0.

The teams traded runs in the first inning, the Flyers getting theirs on a two-out double by Kirk Pierce (2-4, HR, 2 B, 2 R, 3 RBI) that scored Rudy Gomez. Winnipeg responded on a one-out solo shot by Pat Scalabrini. Schaumburg regained the lead in the second once again with two out when B.J. Garrison singled home Eric Goerdt.

Up 2-1, Schaumburg made it 4-1 in the third. With Mario Delgado aboard on a lead-off single, Pierce drilled a Roger Luque (5.1 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 5 SO) offering deep to left to make it 4-1. But it wouldn't last long, as the Goldeyes came right back off Dave Therneau (5.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 5 SO) with three in the bottom of three to knot it.

Max Poulin singled to lead it off and came around on a Brent Sachs double. Sachs moved up two batters later on an infield single by Jalal Leach and scored shortly after on an error by Pierce to make it 4-3. Berrios then singled to score Leach and make it 4-4.

The hosts took their first lead in the fifth. With men on the corners and one out, Poulin grounded out to Gomez, allowing Rusty Keith (2-3, R, 2 SB) to score and make it 5-4. It stayed that way until the eighth when Pierce drew a lead-off walk from Heath McMurray (3.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 8 SO) and moved up on a passed ball. McMurray then struck out the next two batters, but surrendered the tying run on a Ben Van Iderstine single that scored Pierce.

Neither team threatened through the rest of regulation, sending it into extra innings. Dickinson sat the Flyers down in order in the top of the tenth and Weber looked poised to do the same in the bottom of the tenth. After retiring the first two batters on ground outs, he served up a ball that Berrios crushed to deep centre. It left the park, but bounced back onto the field after hitting a scaffolding. Regardless, it was good for his eleventh dinger of the year to end it.

Having swept the Flyers, who left town following the game bound for St. Paul, the Goldeyes will look to do the same to Joliet starting tomorrow on Shirt Off Our Backs Night. Denny Wagner (3-4, 3.49) goes for us while lefty Brian Mazone (0-2, 3.35) replies for them. Game time is 7 p.m. and great seats are still available at all Ticketmaster locations including the ballpark box office.
