Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY â The Gary SouthShore RailCats will play a schedule of 48 home dates at U. S. Steel Yard in 2004, as the Northern League expands to a 96-game schedule for next season.
The 2004 Northern League championship season will open on May 21 and end September 5. Each team will play 48 home and 48 road dates, with 56 games scheduled against intra-divisional opponents and 40 games against teams from the opposite division.
"This represents careful and positive expansion of the Northern League season," Northern League commissioner Mike Stone said. "We look forward to providing more game dates for our fans."
The Northern League has played a 90-game schedule, with 45 home dates for each team, each of the last three seasons. The league expanded to ten teams, adding the RailCats and the Joliet JackHammers, in 2002.
"I think this is terrific news for RailCats fans in Northwest Indiana," RailCats vice president / general manager Roger Wexelberg said. "The increased schedule will give our fans additional chances to enjoy the fun, affordable, family entertainment of RailCats baseball."
The Northern League, which is in its 11th season of operation since spearheading the establishment of independent baseball in 1993, leads all independent professional baseball leagues in average attendance, drawing an average of 4,280 fans per home date (through games of August 6, 2003). Among the 14 affiliated minor leagues, only the two Triple-A leagues and the Double-A Eastern League average more fans per home date than the Northern League.
