Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

(SIOUX FALLS, SD) – The Canaries have traded OF Mike Kirkpatrick to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in exchange for a player to be named later, it was announced today. The speedy outfielder was hitting .284 with two home runs and 11 RBI in 25 games for Sioux Falls this year.

Kirkpatrick, 25, started the 2003 season red hot, and his .405 average and eight doubles through nine games earned him a place in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Nagging injuries cooled him off during his brief stint with Class-A Palm Beach, however, and he returned to the Birds' lineup on July 13. After rejoining the club, Kirkpatrick went 10-for-57 (.175) with a homer and seven RBI.

In a separate move, the Canaries have signed rookie LHP Erik Turnrose, who is expected to join the club for Monday's game at Kansas City. Turnrose, 27, played earlier this year with Calgary of the now-defunct Canadian Baseball League, and has pitched professionally since 1999. While with Calgary, the Maryland native was 1-0 with a 5.06 ERA. Used mainly as a situational pitcher out of the bullpen, Turnrose pitched 10 2/3 innings and struck out 13 while walking only three hitters. The Western Carolina University graduate previously played in the independent Frontier and Texas Louisiana Leagues and has a lifetime record of 2-3 with a 4.54 ERA in 69 1/3 innings pitched.

The Canaries take on the Gary Southshore Railcats tonight in the first of a three-game set starting at 7 p.m. RHP Chad Johnson will square off with RHP Tony O'Donnell in the series opener.
