Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes saw their second-half record fall to 17-6 tonight with a 10-7 loss to the Joliet JackHammers before a CanWest Global Park crowd of 7,434.

The visitors scored in only two innings, but they were both big innings. Joliet torched Denny Wagner (4.1 IP, 10 H, 9 R, 3 BB, 0 SO) for five in the first and then touched him for four more during a five-run fifth. Wagner fell to 3-5 with the loss while Brian Mazone (6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO) improved to 1-2 with the win.

After walking Anthony Monegan to lead it off, Wagner gave up five straight singles to make it 5-0 before the game was 10 minutes old. Joliet doubled its lead in the fifth in similar fashion, scoring five times on five more hits plus a couple of errors.

The hosts showed signs of life in the seventh with a couple of runs and then seemed poised to complete the comeback in the eighth when they sent nine men to the plate. But Max Poulin grounded into an inning-ending double play, cutting the rally short at 10-7. Winnipeg would get no closer, as Brent Franklin doused the fire at about the same the skies opened up, striking out the side in the ninth for his fourth save.

These same two teams meet again tomorrow on Library Night. Fans are asked to bring a used book to donate to the Seven Oaks Hospital. Sorry, neither library books nor coffee table books about coffee tables will be accepted, although we appreciate the gesture. Joey Cramblitt (8-3, 2.84) goes for us while Mike Zipser (3-8, 5.45) replies for them. Game time is 7 p.m. and great seats are still available at all Ticketmaster locations including the ballpark box office.
