Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

It would appear the Winnipeg Goldeyes will no longer suffer through a slump if Luis Villarreal has any say in the matter.

Wednesday afternoon at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Villarreal shut down the Kansas City T-Bones while getting himself a load of run support as the Goldeyes drilled K.C. 10-4.

With the win, Winnipeg got a little revenge for Tuesday night's 8-7 loss to the T-Bones - a loss that came on Kala Kaaihue's walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th.

The Fish also won their 11th game in 15 outings and improved to 26-18 on the season.

Villarreal, who is now 5-0 with a 1.82 earned run average, went six complete innings, allowing one run on just six hits as the Fish got on the board quickly and didn't stop hitting. Winnipeg finished with 10 runs on 12 hits.

It was a particularly good day for catcher Luis Alen (.264), DH Jon Weber (.321) and third baseman Louis Ott (.322). Alen went two-for-three with a walk and three runs driven in; Weber went three-for-five with two runs scored and two RBI; and Ott went three-for-four with a run batted in and two runs scored.

The Goldeyes put up three runs in the first as Kody Kaiser singled, Brian Myrow walked and Weber singled, driving home Kaiser and sending Myrow to third.

With Weber on second and Myrow on third, Alen hit a ground rule double and the Goldeyes suddenly had a 3-0 lead.

The Goldeyes scored one in the fourth when Weber doubled and Alen singled him home and then they made it 5-0 in the fifth when Wes Long hit a solo homer, which was the eventually game-winning run.

Kansas City scored their only run off Villarreal when Jimmy Mojica homered in the sixth, but the Goldeyes weren't done.

In the seventh, the Fish put three more on the board as Ott singled, Brian Joynt singled and Price Kendall was safe on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Kody Kaiser, who was also safe on a fielder's choice, drove home Ott, then Long walked to load the bases again. Myrow grounded out to first, but Kendal scored, and then Weber singled to score Kaiser.

In the eighth, the Fish reached double figures as Alen walked, went to second on a ground out by Justin Bass and scored on a triple by Ott. Joynt then singled, his second hit of the day, and that drove in Ott with Winnipeg's final run of the afternoon.

Kansas City scored a three runs in the ninth as Jeff Hulett hit a two-run homer and Ray Sadler singled home Mojica, all off William Jackel, but the Goldeyes had scored enough runs to save the bullpen from another embarrassing collapse. Chad Benefield got the final out.

Villarreal earned the win for Winnipeg, his fifth victory in six outings, while Kansas City starter Devin Anderson (3-6, 6.03 ERA) took the loss. There was no save.

Ace Walker (3-3, 3.86 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg on Thursday night as the Goldeyes and Kansas City play the final game of this three-game series.

Game time is 7:05 p.m. and can be heard live, with Paul Edmonds, on Sports Radio 1290.
