Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

SIOUX FALLS- In the Sioux Falls Pheasants' longest game since 2007, the Sioux City Explorers did just enough in the Pheasants' 3-2 loss in 14 innings Tuesday at Sioux Falls Stadium.

Down 2-1 in the eighth inning, the Pheasants put runners at first and third with one out. Hunter Jobes tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left field that slid Francisco Leandro home just ahead of the throw.

As Tuesday night approached Wednesday morning, the two clubs struggled to mount any offensive attack until the 14th inning, when reliever Chris Salberg hit Tyler Goodro with the bases loaded to bring home the first run since the eighth inning.

Andrew Snowdon pitched two perfect innings to collect the win.

"We didn't get any key hits, we had five errors," said manager Steve Shirley. "Frankly, we didn't do anything well enough to win."

The Pheasants struggled throughout the night with runners on base, as they left nine men on in scoring position.

The game began as a pitcher's duel between the Pheasants' Adam Cowart and Sioux City's Nick Schumacher. Each starter allowed just one unearned run through the first six innings.

The Pheasants plated the first run of the game when Brandon Sing reached on error to score Gus Milner. Sioux Falls had plenty of chances to add to their early lead, but could not get the big hits.

The Explorers tied the game in the sixth. Tyler Goodro doubled to the left-field corner to bring home Wally Backman all the way from first. Sioux City nearly scored another on a double from Javier Brito, but Goodro was thrown out at home on a strong relay throw from shortstop Joe Anthonsen to hold the score at 1-1.

Cowart was solid in the no-decision, giving up one run while scattering eight hits in six innings of work.

"He threw well enough to give us an opportunity to win the game," Shirley said. "We had plenty of scoring opportunities and we didn't make anything happen."

Sioux City took an advantage in the seventh. Derek Schermerhorn singled off reliever Ryan Grant with one out, then stole second and advanced to third on a errant throw from catcher Henry Contreras. Schermerhorn scored on a groundout from TJ Bohn to give the Explorers a 2-1 lead.

Schumacher threw 128 pitches in seven innings, allowing one unearned run on six hits with five strikeouts.

Javier Brito led the Explorers' offense with three hits. Goodro had two RBI.

The Pheasants are now 18-26, and sit eight games back of the North Division-leading St. Paul Saints.

The two teams head across the border to Sioux City for game two of this home-and-home series at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29. The game will be broadcast live on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and online at www.kwsn.com.
