SIOUX CITY, Iowa. - One night after mustering just two runs in 14 innings, the Sioux Falls Pheasants pounded the Sioux City Explorers with an 11-2 thumping in Sioux City on Wednesday night.

The Pheasants whacked three home runs and knocked out 14 hits - eight for extra bases -- in the rout of their I-29 rivals.

Sioux Falls scored five times in the first inning and never looked back. After back-to-back hits from Joe Anthonsen and Trevor Lawhorn to start the game, Gus Milner lifted a sacrifice fly to score Anthonsen for the first Pheasant run. Brandon Sing later walked, and Francisco Leandro doubled home Lawhorn. Reggie Abercrombie then cleared the bases with a three-run home run, his sixth of the year.

The Explorers doubled in a run in the bottom of the first, but the Pheasants notched an unearned run in the second. The Explorers scored for the last time in the fourth on Brett Flowers groundout to shave the lead to 6-2.

Both Lawhorn and Henry Contreras led off the seventh and eighth innings with a solo home run to extend the lead to 8-2. The Pheasants scored three more times in the ninth, highlighted by Abercrombie's RBI-double to left center field.

Abercrombie was 3-for-5 with four RBI and stretched a hitting streak to eight games. Leandro was a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Lawhorn also went 3-for-5, all for extra bases. Anthonsen was 2-for-5.

Brandon Rapoza (2-6) had plenty of support for his second win. The righty allowed both runs and seven hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out two. Ryan Grant, Sam Walls and Ryan Fleckenstein each tossed a scoreless inning in relief, retiring the final nine batters.

The Pheasants beat Sioux City starter Kyle Wright (3-5) for the second time this season. He gave up seven runs, six earned, in six-plus innings for the loss.

The four-game, home-and-home series continues at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, June 30 in Sioux City. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
