Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the El Paso Diablos 6-5 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Wichita staved off a late Diablos' rally that saw a home plate collision in the top of the eighth that cut down the potential tying run.
With the Wingnuts leading 6-4, and with the bases loaded and one out for El Paso, Josh Dew was called from the bullpen for a five-out save opportunity. The first batter Dew faced, Johan Garcia, bounced a single into shallow left field that cut the lead to 6-5. On the same play, Stephen Douglas attempted to score from second base to tie the game, but was thrown out at the plate by Mike Conroy. Wingnuts' catcher Matthew Powell received Conroy's throw a few feet up the third base line before withstanding Douglas' tackle to record the second out. Dew then struck out Kyle Nichols on three pitches to end the inning and keep the Wingnuts in front.
Dew worked around a walk and a single in the ninth inning to record his 12th save of the year.
Wichita scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take an early 3-0 lead. Jorge Delgado led off with a line drive single to center and went to third when Josh Workman pulled a double down the right field line. Both runners scored on Josh Horn's triple to center that sailed over the head of Kory Drew. Two batters later, Jose Duran singled to center to drive in Horn. Duran went 3 for 3 and extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
After the Diablos scored a run in the third on an RBI groundout, Duran tripled with one out in the fourth and came home on a wild pitch thrown by El Paso starter Jae Jung.
Nichols hit a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 4-3. Wichita scored one in the fifth on a Workman sacrifice fly, and another in the seventh on a Horn RBI double.
Chad Sherman started for the Wingnuts and earned his first career win. Sherman allowed three earned runs on eight hits in five and two-thirds innings. Sherman struck out two and walked two.
Jung took the loss, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits in five and one-third. Jung did not allow a walk, nor record a strikeout.
Jared Simon pitched one and one-third innings of scoreless relief.
The series concludes on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Steve MacFarland faces right-hander Scott Hodsdon. For tickets, call the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-NUTS or visit the Wingnuts' official website at www.wichitawingnuts.com.
