Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
LINCOLN, Neb. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats rallied from a pair of two-run deficits to collect a 7-6 decision over the Lincoln Saltdogs and tally their fourth consecutive victory on Wednesday night.
Adam Klein helped the RailCats take the lead in the first inning for the second consecutive contest. Klein worked the count full before drawing a leadoff walk from Lincoln starter Alex Maestri. Klein moved to second on a groundout and scored on a double from Brad Boyer.
Lincoln took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second against RailCat starter Jack Frawley. Jorge Cortes led off with a walk, stole second, and scored on a double by Brandon Jones. Joe Ramos put the Saltdogs ahead with a double down the left field line, plating Jones. Ramos scored later on a sacrifice fly. Frawley pitched 6.1 innings in the game.
The lead didn't last long as the RailCats evened the game with two runs in the top of the third. Chris Carrara led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second. Mike Massaro tallied his league leading seventh triple to drive home Carrara and scored when Boyer singled. Carrara tripled home Craig Maddox in the sixth as the RailCats retook the lead at 4-3.
The Saltdogs tied the game with a two-out run in the bottom of the inning and opened a 6-4 lead with two runs in the seventh as Blake Gailen and Gavin Dickey collected RBIs. The deficit did not hold the RailCats down, who took advantage of an error to score three runs, two unearned, in the eighth and steal the win. Mike Rohde and Maddox led off with singles before Klein walked with one away. A controversial call at second on a fielder's choice plated a run as Klein was ruled safe. Cristian Guerrero drove home the winning run with a two-out two-strike single.
Jeremy Hauer tallied the win, upping his record to 2-0, while Travis Minix stranded the tying run at third in the bottom of the ninth to collect his third save. Massaro, Boyer, and Guerrero knocked home two runs each. The RailCats drew eight walks in the game. Nolan Nicholson appeared as a pinch runner in the contest.
The roadtrip comes to a close tomorrow night with another 7:05 p.m. tilt as the RailCats, who have won their first road series of the year, aim for the sweep. RHP Nolan Nicholson (2-5, 5.86) starts for the RailCats, who are now eight games over .500 for the first time this year. RHP John James (5-2, 6.08) counters for the Saltdogs.
The RailCats return to U. S. Steel Yard on Saturday, June 2 for a 6:10 p.m. contest with Sioux Falls on Steel Day. The first 1,000 kids entering the U. S. Steel Yard on Steel Night will receive the ever-popular RailCats lunchbox with an all-new design, courtesy of Geminus Prevention Services and The Post-Tribune. On Steel Night, the RailCats honor the industry that brought the City of Gary into existence!
