
Gladiators Check Checkers, 5-1

Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Gladiator used 23 saves by Michael Garnett and two point nights from Cam Brown, Blue Bennefield and Kevin Doell to beat the Charlotte Checkers 5-1 on Tuesday night.
Blue Bennefield opened the scoring at 8:22 of the first period. Charlotte netminder Scott Meyer though he had covered the puck in the crease but the puck slid out from under his glove and sat loose in the crease where Bennefield whacked the loose puck into the net. Kris Goodjohn and Evan Nielsen added assists on the goal.
The Gladiators took a 2-0 lead to the first intermission when Cam Brown slipped out of a scrum in the corner and ripped a snap-shot through traffic and past Meyer. The unassisted goal came at the 16:05 mark of the first period.
Kevin Doell pushed the Gladiators lead to 3-0 at 6:49 of the second period on quick shot that beat Meyer over the shoulder. Cam Brown and Blue Bennefield hooked up to set up Doell on the goal.
Brandon Cullen beat Gladiators goaltender Michael Garnett on a quick shot through traffic from the right face off circle to get the Checkers on the board. Dave Inman and Benoit Dusablon added the assists on the goal at 8:12 of the middle stanza.
The Gladiators took a 4-1 lead early in the third period on Wes Fox's first professional goal. Fox slipped down the right wing and put a move on a Checkers defenseman and let a backhander go that beat Meyer at 3:35 of the third. Steve Slonina added an assist on the goal.
Troy Milam added a power play goal at the 4:23 mark of the third period to round out the scoring. Brandon Dietrich and Kevin Doell added the assists on the Milam's slap shot from the point to give the Gladiators the 5-1 lead.
Michael Garnett made 23 saves in the win as the Gladiators improve to 13-4-3 on the season and recapture the best record in the ECHL.
The Gladiators are back in action on Friday when the Columbus Cottonmouths visit the Arena at Gwinnett Center for a 7:35 p.m. match up. It ‘s replica youth jersey night and the first 2,000 kids will get a Gladiators replica jersey courtesy of Amica Insurance and the Gladiators.
