Kevin Doell tallied his second hat trick of the season while Michael Garnett recorded his third shutout of the season for the Gladiators in a dominating 8-0 win over the Texas Wildcatters on Friday at the Ford Arena in Beaumont, Texas. A deflection by Kevin Doell in front of Texas netminder Davis Parley gave the Gladiators an early 1-0 lead. Joe Bourne's slap shot from the left point found its way through traffic off of Doell for the game's first goal. Brandon Dietrich added an assist on the goal at 5:06 of the opening period. Joe Bourne pushed the Gladiators lead to 2-0 on a 5-on-3 power play 2:13 into the second period as the Gladiators cycled the puck in the Texas zone on the man advantage. Brandon Dietrich added the assist on the goal. Gwinnett took a 3-0 lead before the second penalty of the advantage expired as Bourne added his second of the contest flipping a loose puck in the slot over Parley for the tally. Chris Durno and Jim Jackson added the assists on the power play goal at 2:39 of the period. Kevin Doell added his second of the night at 6:14 of the second as he picked up a rebound left by Parley in the slot off a 2-on-1 with Anthony Aquino for the tally. Paul Flache also added an assist on the goal. Gwinnett took a 5-0 lead before the end of the second period on Doell's third of the evening for the hat trick. Doell picked up the puck in the high slot and walked in on Parley untouched and ripped a snap-shot past the netminder for the tally. Wes Swinson added an assist on the goal at 16:03 of the middle stanza. Chris Durno extended the Gladiators lead to 6-0 with a snap shot that beat Parley over the right pad off a rebound in front of the Texas net. Wes Fox added an assist on the goal at 4:51 of the third period. Gwinnett took a 7-0 lead on the power play as Kris Goodjohn threaded the puck past Parley on the short side at 15:15 of the third period. Swinson and Jim Jackson added the assists on the goal for Gwinnett. Anthony Aquino rounded out the scoring for the Gladiators as he ripped a wrist shot over the shoulder of Parley on the power play with 1:44 left in the final period. Doell and Jackson added the assists on the goal for Gwinnett. Making his first start for the Gladiators since January 13th in Mississippi, Michael Garnett recorded his third shutout of the season with Gwinnett turning aside all 23 shots thrown at him for the win to help the Gladiators improve to 38-21-7 on the season. Gwinnett is back in action tomorrow as they travel to Lafayette, Louisiana to take on the Louisiana IceGators in an 8:05 p.m. start at the Cajundome.
The Gladiators finish their inaugural home regular season on Friday, April 2nd against Columbus and Saturday, April 3rd against Florence at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. It's Sports Radio 680 AM The Fan Appreciation weekend and both game get underway at 8:05 p.m.
