Lynx Down Grrrowl 5-3

March 26, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release

The Augusta Lynx got power play goals when it counted most, scoring twice with the man advantage in the final 2:26 of regulation to grab a 5-3 win over the Greenville Grrrowl at the Bi-Lo Center on Friday night.

The Grrrowl opened the scoring in the first period of play when Mark Concannon beat Jason Saal with a slap shot from the right wing at 4:27 from Randy Dagenais and Mike Nelson. Augusta would come back, however, using a bounce to their advantage when Jarrett Thompson fed a puck in front that deflected in off a Grrrowl defender's skate and past a helpless Daniel Boisclair to tie the game at 1-1 after the first 20 minutes of play.

Augusta would get the better of Greenville in the second period as Terry Marchant kicked things off with his 30th goal of the year from Louis Goulet and John Cronin at 5:30 of the middle frame, followed by Sean O'Connor's first goal as a Lynx at 9:02, a shorthanded marker from Goulet and Martin Lapointe. O'Connor was sprung on a breakaway just before his goal, hitting the crossbar behind Boisclair while Greenville cleared the rebound to center. Goulet stole the puck at center ice and walked back in with O'Connor, teeing up a shot that was stopped by the Grrrowl netminder, who kicked the rebound right to O'Connor in the slot for the goal and a 3-1 Lynx lead.

Greenville would not go quietly in the game, scoring twice in the third period to even the score at 3-3. Mike Nelson notched the first marker at 4:41 followed by Concannon's second goal of the night at 6:51 to get the Grrrowl right back into the game. Both teams would battle over the next ten minutes of play, when Augusta ended up with a five-on-three power play advantage. Calling a time out to draw up strategy, the Lynx came out and scored while two men up at 17:34 on a drive from Lapointe to make it a 4-3 Lynx lead. Goulet and Todd Bennett added helpers on the goal, which was followed by an insurance power play goal on the ensuing five-on-four by Thompson, who collected his second goal of the night from Bennett and Goulet at 18:06 for a 5-3 final.

Jason Saal earned his 18th win of the year with a 16 save performance while Boisclair stopped 38 shots in taking the loss. Augusta would finish the game with a 2-for-4 mark on the power play, key down the stretch in helping the club earn the win. Lynx penalty killers were back at it again, holding the Grrrowl off the board in four chances.

Augusta's next game will come Saturday night against Florence at 7:30 pm, with the pre-game show kicking off on EAGLE 102 at 7 pm. Join Tom Callahan for all the play-by-play action as the Lynx look to continue their winning ways over the Pride!
